Rhodesian Canberra Bush War ops

Evening all,

just finished reading the superb 'Winds of Destruction' by Peter Petter-Bowyer. This has duly inspired me to paint up one of my Rhodesian B.2s in the 'anti-Strela' paintwork devised by the author in the mid 70s to help 'mask' RhAF aircraft IR emissions from SA-7 tracking. This was a specially-devised paint mix that lowered the IR signature of the overall airframe, and was used in conjunction with actual exhaust port redesign for certain aircraft. On the Canberra, only the paintwork was implemented and was successful in drastically lowering the ability of the SA-7 to track its target.

In these shots, I am using my new paint for R2250, a B.2 operating from New Sarum AB, (now Harare) on a typical Fireforce bush op. Spot the Strela trails in some of these - fortunately the paintwork worked and I came back in one piece...

Outbound to target - a ZANLA camp spotted by a Lynx recce aircraft - note the effectiveness of the faded, lo-viz paintwork in a visual sense alone:

Running in - Strelas firing but not homing in - excuse the shaky camera work by my wingman - he had a lot on his hands:

Firing rockets:

Outbound and more failed launches:

Safe and sound and heading to the bar.

Beautiful thread:applause::applause::applause:
I went to your site and couldn't find the repaint in the "fire & ice section" , is it going to be released?
I think we couldn't have a RhAF Canberra serie without the bush war one.
Thanks

Steve B., I have your complete aircraft series and every repaint I can find. Huge Canberra fan, English and U.S. variants. Your products are works of art and well worth the investment. The aircraft combines ease of control with a fighter-like response (for a fair-sized twin) to input. It is a joy to fly.

I've just come from your site and reference is made there to upcoming models and color schemes. This one isn't listed. Is it at the texture download site (post-Nazca)? Presumably this is one of the schemes about to be released?

Morning all,

first up- thanks for the very kind works there chaps, means a lot to know I am on the right track. Glad you find them both pleasing to the eye and to fly. Regarding this particular paint scheme, when it is released, it will live here, as part of the Fire and Ice pack repaints page:

I have two others (an RAE Raspberry Ripple B.6 and a Peruvian B(I).56) to come this week as well, in fact I intend to package them all up tonight. These will be for the Bomber Power pack.

Is this something that you did in FS2004?

Hi Sid,

yes it most certainly is; I do have FSX, but still am developing for FS2004 and this little montage was made in that sim. I will admit I treated a couple of the images (blur, Strela smoke launches) in Photoshop to make a more interesting story. I did contemplate mocking up an Alpha bomb attack but did not have the time. Still, a fun series to fly - taken north of Rhodesia near the Zambian border.

Is that some custom scenery i see in your screenies Steve :jump:
( isnt that typical of a scenery man. looks at something as lovely as your Canberra, and only notice's the hanger textures :mixedsmi: , takes allsorts i suppose)

cheers ian

Good eye you have there, Ian! It is indeed somewhat custom scenery - I downloaded Harare Intnl, from somewhere (sorry slips my mind) then started work on the New Sarum AB part of the airport using EZ Scenery. Not much at the moment ,just some hangars, parked vehicles and supplies etc. to add a bit of detail.

Bush war Rhodesian B.2 ready for ops - download her here:

Also a nice new 'raspberry ripple' B(I).6, WT309 of the Corgi die cast model fame, along with a FAP B(I).56 here:

Fire up those Avons gentlemen!

Thanks Steve, a very purposeful looking scheme. :icon29:

Will you be releasing New Sarum as well at some point? Rhodesian/Zimbabwean airfields are a little light on the ground, Im trying to pull together enough reference material to have a crack at Thornhill AB, just to fill another gap.

Glad you approve WH. Not as good as a new pack, granted, but better than total drought eh? Post some screens once you get flying these - I'd love to see what you get up to.

Those will do nicely thank you! Good to see 309 stretching her legs - where were you flying from? And no, I don't know the home base of the Reds!
