I hear ROF is out now and available, but so far everyone's been mum on it. How about it... anybody have it yet? Any PIREPs you can share?

Yes, I have it. I am just starting the training missions, but here are my initial impressions:

1. Registration/activation - you must must have a valid email address and register on their website for the game to launch. Once you register, you need to wait for the confirmatory email back. Mine arrived over 8 hours later - no play till then.

2. It appears to come with only two planes. You must purchase additional planes from their website (haven't checked the cost).

3. Setting up controllers is a bit of a hassle. I and others had trouble with the axes being inverted. Although there is a setting to invert axes, it doesn't work. You must edit the .map file to correct this. A pain, but the fix works.

4. Training missions are cinematic and nicely done. Characters talk through the training missions and then you get to fly through hoops.

5. Sound effects (esp. wind woosh), flight dynamics, cockpit visuals and environment textures are all EXCELLENT. Very pleasing "actual flight" sensation. Worth the $39.95 right there.

6. Cockpits not clickable - bit of a downer.

7. Track IR supported.

Overall - am very pleased, and glad I bought it.

Bill:

I preordered mine from gogamer.com. It arrived yesterday. I see it is also available at fspilotshop.com.

Just got my copy from gogamer. I'll report back later. :running:

Please don't buy this, Bill, until you finish the Tailwind. :icon_lol:

cheers,

Mine will be here on Monday or Tuesday, I had to order it from the States, noone here in Aussie had even heard of it lol

Been playing it for about an hour now and I love it so far. The inverted axes are a pain in the butt, but the flying is flat out awesome. The sounds are really detailed and well done. On one flight after taking several rounds in the engine the performance and the sounds progressively got worse over time and this also seems to depend somewhat on mixture and radiator settings too. I managed to land just before the engine gave out. The AI pilot had no mercy as he kept making passes strafing the hell out of me.

I wrecked the Fokker into some trees and flipped it over and when I switched to the external view to admire the excellent damage model I saw gasoline pouring out of the damaged engine. Pretty cool stuff:ernae:

I have some shots of my best crashes so far. It's taking forever to upload 'em to photobucket though. I'll post them as soon as they are finished.

it took a while to get AA and AF to work on my rig - had to turn off something called Post Effects.
then create a profile in Nhancer so the setting wouldn't conflict with FSX

After poking around in single player - solo flights I can tell you its an ok title...RoF has a lot of room for improvement though

You buy it and then you have to really glean the forums for tips on getting it to work and thats not an ideal situation

just getting it to the right resolution for my comp. was a bit of a hassle - finally found the cure in the settings .cfg within the main folder and then more digging to get my Sidewinder throttle to work - then the whole AA / AF settings thing - and with all that there are still all of the GUI shortcomings.

for instance - in single player - there is no way to select the weather conditions, the opponent skill level or equipment, the time of day or season - nada.

but once you get in the air....more little niggles - the ingame map dogs the FPS to nil and you cant reduce its size, move it out of the center of the screen, or lock the zoom level...so everytime you open it - it is front and center, far to big, and zoomed all the way in - and it does not self-center on your plane / flight - you have to manipulate the map view while flying mind you - in a stuttering mess.

for now I just don't use the ingame map.

All in all RoF looks pretty good although the distance or horizon always looks low res. and jaggy...hopefully they will increase the LOD range soon

I have to say - after flying alot of Lomac FC - the clouds and the terrain in RoF look very similar to it - almost too familiar...especially the clouds - they look straight out of lomac.

Here's the one with the gas leaking out. Look between the machine guns.

those are great, scratch - the damage models are really well done - and when you saw the wing off of an opponents with MG's it really looks convincing - pieces twirling down and whatnot.

here are some shots of the other RoF fighter - just me tooling around FSX style in a Spad

Definitely a keeper for me. Not without flaws, but there's so much here that is really impressive.

Shadowing in the cockpit is just beautiful, damage model is fabulous, and the airplane is hard enough to fly, much less fight in, that I'll be seeing the damage model quite a bit.

Menu is awkward for me so far, manual is way underdone, but much to learn and not much time with it yet.

Stunning achievement for neoqb for sure. :ernae:

And, on second thought, Bill, I guess it's ok if you get it now. It's going to keep me busy for awhile, so I can be more patient on the Tailwind. But I do want the Tailwind. :jump:

cheers,

The whole registration/setup/configuration process is inexcusably bad.

That said, though, the sim itself is pretty darn slick.

And before ya'll start going crazy with the rivet counting, keep in mind that this the first all-new (as opposed to update of an older sim or IL-2 enhancement) airplane combat sim since CFS3 was released (and whined about to death) in 2002.

So I hope they improve the registration process and the idiotic menuing ("this plan is not aviable (sic) to you") issues. Because the underlying sim is really nice.

english is not the native language of neoqb so I dont mind those kinds of things so much as the overall lack of information on how to use the menus or for the lack of player options in those menus...

I can see why they might have left the tabs in for planes that are as yet not available - kind of a teaser...but that they left those planes selectable in the menu and allow you to sit through what appears to be a loading screen - before a popup appears informing you that you cant fly that plane - is just wrong. funny, but wrong.

I am still struck by their marketing genius in using FSX to promote their sim with the outstang Dr1 model - and then canceling it out by not including it in their own sim at initial release - thats just a flat prattfall in my opinion.

more RoF : note the MG rounds' smoketrails with trajectory fade and riccochets

I just had the most incredible dogfight with an Albatross! If this is what the AI is like in the rest of the game this is really something. He actually changed tactics several times during the course of the fight. Started head on then went to turning, but I lost him pretty quick. He was underneath me waiting for me to straighten out and when I did he put a few rounds in me. I went down low to meet him and we started weaving back and forth, neither getting behind the other. Every time he passed in front of me I would put some rounds in him. After getting hit several times he stopped weaving, flew opposite to me for a little distance then turned around and wounded me pretty good as the screen started getting red and fuzzy. I cut my engine and glided onto an open field for a bumpy, but good landing and he finished the job before I could roll to a stop. One helluva dang fight!!
This is what was left of me:
