Rocket car and salt flats.

Hey guys, been a while since ive been here. As i was searching through some stuff on the simmarket page, i went to the free section and came across a rocket car for fsx. I downloaded it and looked inside the model folder to see that i wasnt built specifically for fsx. I then proceeded to convert all the textures to a workable format, but noticed through process of elimination that the airfile causes a ctd.

I was wondering if anyone out there is aware of some sort of land vehicle for fs2004 and scenery that i could use with this addon. A) to use an airfile and B) to do speed runs.

The model itself is based off of richard nobles Thrust SSC.

here is a video and link to the addon (you need a simmarket account)

Yes indeed. Many years ago, someone who was just getting into scenery decided to start with something easy - a vast expanse of flat, plain white, empty salt flat. They made the Bonneville salt flats and someone - don't recall if it was the same person or someone else - made models of two of the jet-powered land speed record cars. When I get a few minutes later I'll peruse my backups and see if I can find it for you.

I found it more easily than I expected. Sometimes I surprise myself!

The scenery and the models were done by two different people. I don't know where they came from but no FlightSim or AvSim ID file popped out at me when I looked inside the zip files so they may have come from SimV or possibly even here. Those are the only sites I've ever downloaded from (other than places like Virtavia or CalClassics. )

None of the ReadMe files prohibit distribution, so if the mods agree I could put it in the library, but for now you can grab it from my A-Drive account with this link:

You'll find the salt flats scenery and the American Eagle and Thrust jet cars.

Done many, many years ago. Not same speed, but same kind of event: a Jaguar XK 120 of beginning Fifties drives as AI over the Bonneville Salt Flats.

If someone has a better classic choice, he would be highly welcome.

Interesting scenery, great place to land an X-15 (runway? we don't need no stinkin' runway!).

But as an auto enthusiast I do not consider any of the modern LSR vehicles to be "cars", they cannot be "driven". Since Breedlove set the standard in 1963 - the "Spirit of America" was little more than a jet plane with no wings and beefed up "landing gear" - every record setter has been a jet or rocket engine on a minimal frame with aerodynamic "body" and a tiny cockpit for a "driver". Enough fuel for a full bore blast on a flying mile, then push the "car" around 180deg, refuel, and make a return run within an hour; official time being the average of the two runs.

Even the wheel driven records (oddly mostly done with piston power) are not done with driveable vehicles.

But the fifties were the heyday for wheel powered cars which could actually be driven, even if only on a race track; the hot rod crowd was quite innovative, and the "belly tank" car was one of the most popular styles. Many are still maintained today, running for bragging rights. Would you want to go 300+ mph in one of these? (The record is currently 360)

As far as I know the speed record for a driveable car is 300mph (Bugatti Chiron). Theoretically an F1 car with proper gearing and minimal fuel could top that, but none of the teams are willing to try.
