hey bill,
yeah, i've been on the fence w/ this purchase for a long time because i didn't want to get into the whole FMC, STAR/SID stuff. However, after flying the David Maltby stuff, i'm now itching to try out these more modern planes. So instead of getting that new F-18 for 50$, i decided to get all the highly recommended planes: ATR, LevelD, and the PMDG stuff.
I just installed them all last night. The ATR is the first one i've actually flown (all the others i just loaded up the VC and check it out...all beautiful and smooth on the fps...but no idea how to start the engines, haha). I've very very impressed with it so far. The immersion factor is huge. Everything works in the flight deck and from the VC, so it feels like flying a real plane. It does take some time to learn all the system (the manual is huge!), but it's also very rewarding. You can also check out youtube for tons and tons of tutorial (actually, what i did was to checkout all the youtube stuff first to see all these planes in action. After a few month of watching other people having fun, i had to do it myself! besides, it's the holidays, so a little shopping is great).
After spending about 5 hours in the ATR, i can start the engine, take off, cruise, and decent and make a ILS approach. However, i haven't gotten deep into fuel management, weight calculations, etc yet. The FMC is actually a lot easier to learn than i thought.
I highly recommend this ATR if want to try something complex. It's a good "filler" between the props and the tubeliners; plus that VC is just gorgeous w/ TrackIR.
