can some one tell me how to change the settings in vista so i can make changes to a .cfg and save it?

right now i cant even add a new texture/repaint,wont let me save the stupid thing.

no i dont think so,when i try to save the .cfg it gives me an error saying something about the file structure is wrong...but i dont understand it as its exactly as it is in the files and folders..C/programs/microsoftgames and so on.....i guess i could take a screen shot.

I had a google for the problem and here is one solution that I found interesting:

"I have finally figured out what the problem was. I was using explorer to
open the file with Notepad. When doing this Vista Explorer contains a
viewer of the file on the right hand side. Basically when trying to save
the file it can't because explorer has it open and locked.

Click off of the file in explorer and all of a sudden you can save."

Is it possible this is happening? If Vista Explorer has opened the file it might be keeping it open which would prevent any other program from writing to the file.

Usually you can open .cfg files with multiple programs and still save them but this is because most programs will open the file, read the data into memory and then CLOSE the file. If the program doesn't close the file then no other program can mess with it.

I can right click, then from the drop down list select 'Open with' then choose 'Notepad'. You then have a choice to select a box for it to do that always for that type of file.
But I have just retried this & it always opens in Notepad, left or right click - I must have ticked that box! I use W7, which I think is virtually Vista I think.

I know if one tries to open an .xml file that is part of the plane you are currently flying & try to save it will tell you you cannot, because it is using it.

You can work around this issue by performing a "Reload User Aircraft" once after loading the aircraft in question. This will "unlock" all of the .xml file protections so that you can now load/edit/save .xml files...

Look in the FSX/Options/Controls GUI and assign some key-combo to this command. I use Ctrl-Shift-R myself.

Bill,
Thanks - I have assigned a key for that, but I keep forgetting about it! Senility racing on.......

Make sure you're not flying the aircraft while making changes.
Sometimes the files are seen as being in use so they can't be overwritten.

Seeing as you've installed FSX to the default location in Program Files its almost definitely UAC sticking its nose in where its not wanted.

A bit late now unless you fancy re-installing from scratch but the best way to avoid this is to not install FSX in the default location.
Another drive is best but anywhere outside the Program Files folder will do such as C:\FSX or whatever.
