Scenery Idea

aeromed202

SOH-CM-2014
Some time about the mid 1920's a fellow named Edward R. Armstrong sketched out a proposal to built re-fueling stations for aeroplanes mid-ocean called Seadromes They looked like massive aircraft carriers that were permanently anchored to swing with the wind. Alas, as machines got more fuel efficient the need evaporated.

However they would make a very cool scenery item if someone had the interest and time to make them.

This one remainds me of an old german movie "FP1 antwortet nicht" with Hans Albers. A bad actor... but somehow ... better as William Shatner :)))))

Oh no, I'm a trekkie ;-) pls don't murder me :))))

Cool idea!

Now they could be actual vacation destinations with duty free shops, casinos and who knows what else.

quick save your cash and do it! :icon_lol: i was designing something similar way back when but never figured out how to map large shapes in FSDS *Sad look on face*

I guess it would have to be like a static carrier scenery approach. Couldn't swing with the wind but the flat tops don't either.

It should be possible to swing with the wind since we have wind socks and tetrahedron's that do it well in the sim. Just need a hardened deck that goes with it....if that's possible.

The hardened deck could be an AFCAD landing strip. From the looks of it, this contraption was meant to be a permanent one without the turning to the wind.

Agreed. A little research and you are correct (like you, I couldn't define from the pic(s) a pivot point that would allow weather vaning), the seadrome was meant to be stationary. Of course, it never came to pass, but the design concepts were utilized in oil platforms we now have at sea.

There was an idea presented (patented) in 1936 for floating runways for seaplanes...that could be cranked into position to utilize the wind.

Here are a few shots of the Maunsell Forts in the Thames Estuary by our ever busy Ian Elliot. It looks like a similar design concept to the proposed "Mid Ocean Casinos."

If I remember right they were intended to be anchored at one end so they would always provide an upwind landing, just one of the benefits in the design. I just don't think it got as far as hammering out the details. I thought of the wind sock too but also didn't think a hardened deck could be made movable. Wow if it could though, think of the possibilities. One could pilot an add-on carrier as others had to trap and shoot from it. I couldn't imagine how you could make a plane stay on a moving surface and become part of it until take off time.

But dreaming aside, could a scenery item take on a compass direction while the sim is loading, taken from the specified wind direction? When you load to an airport the sim knows to place you in a certain direction on the runway.

Yes, that can be done. The windsock I use in several sceneries reponds to a change in the wind direction.

Hmm, I think I can see a Junkers w33 landing on one out in the mid-atlantic scenery!! A cool idea if it can be done. Ed

Check over at Simviation, for fs9 SeaDrome

In the 1930's Edward R. Armstrong dreamed of building floating airports across the Atlantic Ocean. Aircraft of the era would have used these seadromes for rest and refueling stops. The idea was studied by the U.S. government but deemed unfeasible. This scenery file includes links and historical articles about Armstrong's grand project. Also includes AI flight plans for use with T-Tools v2.02. Created in AFCAD by R.E. Wyman.
