Scenry Request: RAF Winkleigh

Is there any chance someone could build a small airfield in South West England please.

RAF Winkleigh closed back in the 50's and is now used as a small industrial estate, Reynolds Boughton have a factory there which makes chassis's for there range of airport fire engines.

Here's the history....

Work started in 1940 as a Coastal Command airfield but not completed until the end of 1942, it took so long because the ground was like a marsh.

Opened for Fighter Command 01/01/43 but saw little use and put on Care and Maintenance 08/43.

10/43 to 02/44, Used by various 9th USAAF Squadrons.

04/44 to 09/44, 406 Sqn RCAF Beaufighter and Mosquito night fighters from Exeter, before moving to Colerne.

04/44 to ?, 286 Sqn with Defiants and Hurricanes.

05/44 to 07/44, 415 Sqn RCAF Albacores, before moving to Manston.

07/44, 161 Sqn special duties Lysanders.

11/44 to 08/45, Transferred to 23 Group, Flying Training Command with Norwegian Flying School Harvards from Canada, moved to Norway.

Airfield then closed for flying and sold 12/58.

Thanks for your help

I can do this somewhere in the future. First there are some other bases that are on my plate.

I'll take a look in FS9 and see what the area looks like there. If it's open fields, then I could work on it. . .if the area textures are showing city or residential then I'm at a loss as it would require some landclass work which I'm clueless about.

UPDATE: As close as I can get in FS9 given the differences in Lat/Long readouts, Winkleigh would fall in some pastureland (most of that area of SE England is just that anyways it appears, so I'll start the flatten and AFCAD this evening.

Thanks Falcon, it is located on the edge of a village, only modern industrial buildings and other debris are located there now.

The co-ordinates at the runway intersection are:

50 deg 52'04.51"N
3 deg 57'34.82"W

Elevation is 164M

I have added some detail on the attached photo showing the location of the tower and other buildings, a hanger and dispersal areas.

Many thanks

You'll do it? Fine.

Cees

Ok,

flatten, rwy's and perimeter roads are in place. I'll start the ramps and parking spots tomorrow.

looking forward to seeing it Falcon, many thanks for your help, and thank you too Cees.
One question here. . .the ground textures in the area this needs to reside in are small residential groupings that encroach on the airfield on all sides, however 2 miles to the east is an area better suited. . .more open. . .are you open to moving the airfield to better real estate?

By the way, all the AFCAD work is now done and I'm starting to set the buildings in place.

Just a quick shot of the WIP. Fits nicely into the countryside in the location. I used selective excludes to knock out errant trees and buildings, but left most of them in. . . . .

Falcon,
I can help if you want.
Just leave the airport where it is (should be), send me the wip file and I'll produce a ground poly for it.
BTW: what program do you use?

Looks brilliant. Here's a photo taken two weeks ago.......

Control Tower is in the bottom left hand of the screen.

Nice photo, one of the objects to the left of the tower is a mobile home, the owner of the land has cleard most of the undergrowth away, I am not sure what's happening with the site. No one seems to know.

There were also attampts to build a power station in the middle of the airfield, but this never got through planning, thankfully.

Exactly what I need to learn to do, but no idea how (of course that's what I said about AI traffic and flattens and I do both now, lol).
I use AFX for AFCAD work and SBuilder for the flattens.

Thanks for that Pat, we are trying hard to get a decent copy of the airfield plan, it would be nice to read the detail and see the exact location of the buildings.
