I visited them a few days ago - here are just a couple of pics - wondering if GAS might get around to the Taperwing in the coming year..?
 
They have actually officially changed their name to San Diego Air And Space Museum. I used to work there every summer in high school. Their basement is almost like a mini-airplane factory. Last time I was down there they were working on a replica of the Hughes H-1 Racer! :D
 
have you been to their Gillespie field hangar and machine shop then? They had a Corsair FG1 they were restoring their last year that was a huge project.
I haven't been out there since but they have several interesting airframes "in the backyard" as it were

I would love to see the H-1 !!!
how do I legally get into the basement I wonder...
 
No I haven't. I'm pretty sure that Corsair used to be in the main museum in Blaboa Park for the first part of its restoration. They pulled it out of some lake somewhere. And you don't get to go down to that basement unless you're working for restoration. If you're working there for anything other then restoration or admin, you can still go down there, but there's an area around the elevator you have to stay in, unless you're being escorted or on a special guided tour with permission. Plus, to take the elevator down, you need a special key. The only other way to go down there is if you're a child in there summer classes! :p It's definitely really cool down there, and in addition to the restoration work, there is stuff being stored in there that was or is going to be on display. They actually have an engine to the A-12 Oxcart down there! And a working replica of the engine used on the Wright flyer!
 
on another note: were you able to use any of the suggestions I made to you on getting better FPS out of your i3 rig?

Yeah! In default FSX planes over megascenery I get up to 80FPS!!! Most addons I get FPS in the 30 range, and even in the FPS hungry Wilco Piaggio Avanti I can get 15-20, which is fast enough for me to enjoy it now :)
 
nice - those are great numbers - gives you time to save $$ for a while until you can build that monster rig everybody's always chasing lol
 
Any visit to the SD Aerospace museum must be followed up with a visit to the USS Midway. The docents that work there are mostly ex service men with carrier experience and some have the most excellent stories to tell of their Vietnam duty. My kids thought it was so silly that I made such a big deal over being able to sit in the captain's chair in the bridge up in the island...so little do they know!
 
You Guys don't know how lucky to be able to visit these sites. Where I live is
deadsville when it comes to anything like this. Sigh,Sigh,Sigh,Weep!

The USS Midway is really nice. I went there with my friend from the National Guard a few months ago. He'd never been before, and he loved it. I'm moving to Massachusetts in a few months, so I won't be able to see these museums anymore. But at least I'll be able to see Battleship Cove and the Intrepid Sea and Air Museum! :jump:
