Balloon Busting.

Forced down behind enemy lines. P.O.W.

Did Peter get hit by flak or was it due to enemy pursuit plane activity?

I almost lost my newly minted ace to a massive flak hit on a balloon mission, ran out of fuel just as I hit the trench line and crash landed.

It was mainly due to me hitting the Enter button to fire my rockets at the balloon and them not going off. Followed by about ten pauses while I tried to find the right command, eventually finding it was because the Enter button doesn't work for the ordance command and using the space-bar instead. Then I got hit by fighters from behind and MGs from the ground and my engine started misbehaving. I almost got across the lines, chased and shot-up all the way, but the engine finally packed up completely.

Ho hum, it was hell. :icon_lol:

I have not used rockets, do not trust them...bullets work just fne against the Boche's Drachens.

I've always removed them before, but on this occasion I overlooked them. They suck. :icon_lol:

I shot all 8 of mine at a balloon the other night to no effect. I have no idea where point of aim is for these. I should have probably just gotten closer. But am I right to read that you can shoot those balloons down without using up all your ammo? I've only tried to shoot down a balloon once, and I was as just as ineffective as with the rockets.

Edit:

Just flew another mission. Patrol the lines. Raining heavy. Just like last time. No enemy spotted, so I dove on an enemy airfield to try to shoot up some planes on the ground. That's not easy! Spotted an observation balloon nearby and thought I'd try again. Took a few hundred rounds, but I got her. Sort of hate to do that, though. They can't really shoot back or go anywhere. At least I know I can.

I played around with a modded campaign that only gave me balloon missions a few weeks ago and I got lots of experience with them.

I have had balloons that have needed 3 passes and 500 rounds before they flame and I have had balloons that I fired a few quick burst totalling 50 rounds and have seen it explode almost instantly (these are a bit more rare).

Like you said above Griphos, generally you need about 200 rounds into it (one good , well aimed pass) and it should burn nicely all the way to the ground.

I have noticed that one out of every 3 or 4 times you go after a balloon , flak is going to put some serious damage into you. When that happens , do not press attack, head for the trench line ASAP.

One last thing, only shoot down and only claim the one balloon at the assigned area no matter how many you get on the mission. If you try to claim more than one, you might lose your claim.

Hmmmm.....I never got a chance to claim that balloon. I thought perhaps if balloon busting wasn't the mission, maybe they wouldn't offer a claim. Weird. And this is the same pilot that shot down three EA and had the claim rejected because it was erroneous. I never could figure out what made it erroneous. He's got about 6 hours now, but no kills. He's my favorite...Stan Goble (historical pilot) flying Pups out of RNAS8.

Maybe you thought you got three but only got two actually, in which case the claim-form gives you an "erroneous" response when you try to submit it. Happened to me once. I changed the figure down and then it went through ok. :)

That might have been it, but I actually only claimed two of the three. I'm almost certain about the third, but I was in a bit of a mess at the time and couldn't follow him down. But it's interesting to know the engine "keeps track" for me. If I get that error again, this will be my strategy. Thanks.
