Shupe Carroll D18S Starter

Hi all
Long time Shupe airplane fan but first time poster over here. Finally took the plunge - purchased a new computer and Prepar3d (Windows 10, DX-11). Desperate to have a "Bug Smasher" back in the hangar I tried almost everything from FSX (couldn't find anything specifically for Prepar3d) and found that the click spots in the VC of most aircraft simply didn't work, regardless of the fixes I read about and attempted. The Shupe - Carroll D18S turned out to be the best suited and in my opinion flies even better than it did in FS2004. The only unsolvable I have found is in the starter itself where the red starter button stays down and the engine selector switch moves but only inconsistently actually selects the engine. In no situation am I able to successfully start both engines except by using "control + E". I have read earlier posts about this starter problem being identified in FSX but have not found anything about a work around. I'm wondering if anyone has come up with anything. I would also very much like to have a freighter version useable in Prepar3d in case any talented designers are feeling ambitious.
Thanks.

Hi
Not sure if you mean that as a question but I have no experience with FSX - went straight from FS2004 to Prepar3D. Biggest problem has been finding workable classics that I still enjoy.
Thanks

Yes, it's a statement. Been looking for solution myself.

Maybe somebody can guide us to where we should change what? I expect the answer may lie in the aircraft.cfg file.

That would be helpful.
I have a similar "start" problem with another aircraft although that one is apparently designed for prepar3d. Not many answers out there except for "control + E" unfortunately.

If you attempt to use an aircraft that was compiled with the FS2004 SDK, then you will find that the VC in non-clickable and there are no fixes for that. That most likely extends to the problem you are having as well. . .mdl codeing is different for FSX/P3D aircraft, simple as that. . .so you are probably stuck with ctrl-E to start.

FSX aircraft compiled with the FSX SDK, in other words "Native FSX" (not FS9 aircraft that claim to be FSX Compatable), for the most part port over fairly well with VC's showing most functions remain. Also, most talented designers have a waiting list of aircraft about 2 years long, so I wouldn't expect that wish to come true any time soon.

I have no solution for the starter issue although I can get both engines started in FSX fine but not as originally programmed and intended for FS9.

I did an update back in May (passenger base version only) as a test for WMD but did not release it. It involved a model change to fix some visibility and clickability issues in P3D 1.4 as I recall (and a panel.cfg change but I forget what that was for). WMD probably remembers the details better than I.

The so called Shupe - Carroll version ( I frankly cannot remember what that was it was so long ago) predates some of the later enhancements for FSX. There have been several updates along the way so I do not know the differences.

Wouldn't it be great if a reputable payware company would do a nice D18S so we can put this 10 year old version to rest. :)

At any rate, this issue was brought up last year here: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforu...-Start-Not-Working-(FSX)&highlight=d18s+start

Mr. Shupe et al
Thanks very much for taking the time to help me with your expertise. The D-18s flies so well in Prepar3d that I'll take the starting procedure - live with it and move on - my biggest concern is that I might have screwed something up which could be fixable - given my automation talent - always a possibility.
I enjoy all of the Shupe designs - most were around during much of my career - a plus as well - a freighter would still be awesome.
All the best!

Thank you Warren. No I assure you that the issue is with the switch.

Hmmm Freighter? Do you not have the original version?

Hi
I flew the FS2004 original freighter for years - reminded me of some of the old stuff at work in Ontario. Unfortunately FS2004 and my old trusty computer went to the happy hunting ground almost at the same time. My wife, tired of my wining and bitching found me a new machine into which I installed Prepar3d. I have attempted to locate and install almost every Beech 18 freight combination but the only one I am able to make work acceptably is the one I have written about. The passenger version - N21925 flies very well - in fact typically well beyond my questionable skill level. I just hate looking back at all those frightened passengers - much better to be seeing only poorly loaded cartons with at least some chance of arriving.
Thanks for all your work.

Warren,

Just did some memory refreshing on David Carroll's version. He did this back in early 2010 with my full blessings and I think that is the only FSX native version, although I may be wrong there. Unfortunately he converted only the passenger version. So, I can see where that would be the best choice for you. I think gman5250 also did a paint kit for it; I have something here that looks like a PK.

Good morning everyone:

To begin with, the D-18 version I have in P3D v2.4 I believe is the FS9 'port over' based on the fact that my MDL file is dated June 2005..

When you move the airplane (and from my experiences most FS9 port overs) into 'P3D v2. +', several things are effected - and as stated above, one of which is you loose the capability of 'mouse clickability' in the VC however all the gauges do function and everything you need is on 'popups'.. I have also found that I have an issue with the 'back lit lighting' of the gauges which at current hampers my ability to fly the D-18 at night.. BUT with all that said, I have found the airplane functions and flies very well in P3D v2.4 and when placed in FSX I have found none of these issue's to speak of ..

As far as 'starting' goes, I have found that in both FSX and P3D the 'starter button' is 'defective' (sorry Mr. Shupe) however by installing new 'starter buttons' for each engine (on the switch popup panel) and also re-adjusting the "normalized_starter_torque" in the 'piston engine' section of the aircraft config to " = 0.20", I now can start the engines from 'inside' with no problems - in both sims !!

Hope this helps..

Hi all
Based on Bill's suggestion - thanks Bill - I opened my aircraft .CFG file and found dual entries for "normalized_starter_torque" and this time (one of the few) it wasn't me. I deleted one entry and changed the value of the other and while not perfect was able to start both engines. The start system does not work perfectly (as in FS2004) but it seems currently to be better than before. I'm going to tweak the values a bit and see if it improves.
Thanks to all so far.
