Sikorsky HSS1 "Sonar Drift-Height" gauge

Good morning friends,

actually I work on the cockpit of the Sikorsky HSS1,
Their is an instrument/gauge called Sonar Drift-Height Indicator.
At the official manual An 01-230HLA-1 there is the dashboard of this helicopter which shows this equipment.
But nowhere in the manual it is further mentionned or shown. The sence of this equipment is clear for me but
as I want it to be as correct and nice as possible I need more info about and if possible some photos to rebuild this gauge.
Are the some ancient pilots or mechanic crew members who remember this equipment?
I would be glad about every info possible about this equipment. It seems that as shown on the manual it was only used on the US Navy
helicopters. As far as I know the german navy Sikorsky's did not have it.

Good morning W.B.
it seem to me the Seaking was equiped with more modern Sonars than the venerable HSS1
I join an image from the original manual. Sadly in the manual no further mention is done about this
equipment.
I have boarded the concernt gauge with red

Michael,

I recommend looking into the earlier AN/AQS-4 and/or AN/AQS-5 dipping sonars typical of the Sikorsky S58 / HSS-1 Seabat; while google helps, information is certainly hard to come by

Hallo
it is realy surprising that concerning this special unit as shown in the manual nothing to find on the net
You will find all you want about actual sonars - but his specific one - none.

Michael,

Hope this helps a bit. It's in Spanish (mostly), but can be translated fairly well:

S-55 in Spanish Naval Service.

Maybe this can shed some light?

It would seem the "sonar drift height" would be a difference between the depth the sonar should be at, and the height the sonar unit is actually at when the reading is done.

This would mean the crew would use it to adjust their height (helicopter above water with no radar height, so barometric?) to ensure the sonar unit/antenna is at the depth it's required to be, give or take a few feet?

Just a guess, though, but considering the mention of the cable length, I would guess they would have to keep the unit at a certain depth depending on the frequency it is set to? With a chopper bouncing around like crazy, I would guess this was an early attempt to stabalize as best they could with what they had?

There are also mentions of the sonar operator tweaking certain settings, so maybe that would help him as well.

Saludos!

Hallo Jorge,

nice to read you. Was a long time I did not hear from you
Thank you for the quiet informative post.
Sadly I found no one to make an effect of dipping the sonar buoy.
When all the Sikorsky S-58 I still have in work I will make a long pause!!!!
This project is eating me completly. Still to make the manual for the french versions and the pack.
Than the last in my workshop are the german versions.
Than a long rest from making new projects LOL

Best regards

Michael
