SOH needs your support!

It's time to pay the bills again and we are asking for your support. $11,000 worth.

Sim-Outhouse runs these forums, hosts an enormous library of add-ons (90GB and rising) and runs the server for the SOH Flight Centre and the costs are met by donations from the members. We don't raise money by hosting advertising - the membership don't want it - and costs are rising.

Please give generously and support one of the best flight sum sites going! Click on the Donate button above to give via credit card or PayPal.

Members who donate to the fundraising drive will have Chartered Member 2014 status and will enjoy faster download rates and their user name in red to mark their support.

Thank you!

Perhaps it is now time to begin to impose some further discipline on what the site will accept and retain on the server(s). It is obviously going to get more and more expensive if EVERYTHING is to be kept and no change in procedures is forthcoming.

I have a couple of suggestions I should like to present:

1.) Forum posts that are older than a certain period of time should be deleted. Posts older than 1 or 2 or 3 years to be deleted ??? Admin staff, make a decision. I will agree and abide with what you decide.

2.) There is a lot of "chit-chat" forums and posts that pop up on a rather consistent basis. This is a flight-sim site and forums/posts should now be limited to those topics that concern that subject - not the elections, the economy, notable figures that have died, my favorite music and movies and so forth. We are obviously wasting storage space that has to be paid for so let's tighten it up.

I have been guilty of this in the past but I am now willing to allow the Admin staff to delete my post(s) if they opine that it violates new criteria. I will gladly delegate to them my agreement to do so.

3.) My basic tenet that I am trying to convey is "Get rid of the non-flight-sim items" as much as possible.

Glh,

People have hobbies, lives, and interests outside of flight simming. Every once in a while you need to stick your head out of the car window.

And from a tact perspective, your post, although maybe not intended as such, gives the appearance of you looking down your nose from atop your ivory tower.

Glh,

Not my intent. I understand the bandwith issue, but keep in mind that much of that stems from uploads, which have gotten progressively larger as the sims have increased in detail. FSX scenery and aircraft are an example of this, in many (though not all) cases.

The forums and data tables take up surprisingly little space, in all honesty.

If a member of the site administration cannot accept a sincere suggestion from a member without posting a snide and derogatory remark in return, I come to the conclusion I should just go elsewhere with my time and money.

No intent meant to be snide, and my apologies in that case. I just lent you an opinion on the tone of the thread, not the content.

Please do me a favor, though. We can continue this via PM. I'd rather not detract from the objective of this thread. It's counterproductive, don't you think?

In case anyone is curious...

Here is a snapshot of the SOH library as it stands now. The numbers on the left increase every day, with each new upload.

I put out a call for people to comb through their uploads a while back and discard what wasn't needed or was obsolete, and I'd like to continue that effort. That might help to make a significant reduction in future bandwith costs.

Hi Rami, It would be a shame to delete older threads, they contain much knowledge and are very useful. The loss of all the years of original cfs3 posts a few years back was a real pain.

Would it be possible to zip them up (if that's possible) and archive them somehow or pass them onto someone for safekeeping?

Clive :)

Clive,

Actually, yes. A CFS2 member did this once, perhaps looking at them can give you insight into how it was done: http://www.sim-outhouse.com/sohforums/local_links.php?catid=172

Thanks Rami, I'll take a look :).

I was thinking more along the lines of the whole lot being taken off the server (am only thinking cfs3 here) and sent to someone, is that possible?

Clive,

I'm not sure, but I can ask Dangerous Dave about it.
