SOH Trekkies...favorite Trek games

pilottj

Blues is Life
Hey fellow SOH Trekkies and everyone,

I decided to try out Star Trek Online for a month or two. It isn't bad, it certianly has it's strong areas and weak areas but the concept is really good and it has a lot of potential as it is in continual development...and my Andorian chief tactical officer looks like she could take on one of Panther's women LOL:icon_lol: Look for a little modified Miranda class ship named the USS Bluesmoble and you will have found me.:jump:

As far as other trek games, Bridge Commander is still the one to beat for the 'in the chair' experience IMO. It is akin to flying the A2A B-17 where you must manage a crew and manage systems. ST Online has that but in a much more limited scope. Back in the day Starfleet Academy was quite good.

For stuff in development, this Star Trek Excalibur looks like it could be really good detailed, down to the idea of being able to go to your ready room and discuss things with your crew.

Any of the Trekkies here have favorites? :)

Cheers

I got Star Trek Online as a Christmas present; but I really need a new motherboard to run it the way it should be run. I was invited to a seminar where they were giving away computers but I couldn't attend due to family commitments.

I enjoyed Starfleet Academy, but I think I'm more suited to be a Klingon. I keep hearing good things about Bridge Commander, but I've never played it. Excalibur looks awesome. We'll see.

Excalibur looks pretty cool, haven't tried ST Online (I am curious though, just can't talk myself into the monthly fee).. Bridge Commander is a great game to just go and recreate those big space battles from the shows and movies, haven't played it in years but the free stuff out there for it is endless! Last year, before my HD crashed, I had downloaded all of the MODS, Ships and utilities again to get it where I like it but the drive crashed and I lost it all again.. The only thing I didn't like about BC was that with all of the freeware mods if you installed something it didn't like it would not work anymore and you would have to start all over.

I bought the XBOX 360 game that was released a couple years back, don't remember the name, but It was nowhere near as good as Bridge Commander.

I enjoyed Starfleet Academy, but I think I'm more suited to be a Klingon.

I played SA years ago. Then got into Starfleet Command which lead to my getting into a semi open beta for Klingon Academy. Klingon Academy was originally going to use it's own engine, but the bean counters pushed the team into using the Starfleet Academy engine which seriously limited the game. Use of filmed scenes were included starring Christopher Plummer reprising his role from Star Trek VI but as head of the Klingon Space Academy. Great concept, but it was never allowed to be what it had the potential to become. I had a lot of fun with it, so I guess that's what counts.

I remember Klingon Academy, but it's another game I never owned. My criticism of the Federation is that they constantly break the Prime Directive when their feet are to the fire, while the Klingon Empire has no such pretense. Klingon hypocrisy lies within the application of "honor". They talk a lot about honor, but are prone to tolerating a**holes like Duras. Section 31 has a point.

I had Starfleet Academy, but haven't played it for ages. I think I donated the disc to the library. If I remember correctly, the combat was in 2D, which is why I stopped playing it. Star Trek space combat is probably tricky to model. The ships are supposed to move at tremendous speeds, yet you often see them sidling along side one another like 18th Century ships of the line, and slugging it out point blank. You see the same thing in Star Wars with the capital ships, along with swarms of starfighters moving like WWII a/c.

I have STO and Bridge Commander, and in latter I have an active role as beta tester/crash test dummie and screenshot maker in a team called SF: R&D (StarFleet: Research & Development). I still think that It is slightly better than STO, but unlike in STO which is a wild button smashing most of the time, on BC you can win by tactics more often. Also, graphically, BC is superior when you have the latest Kobayashi Maru-mod installed. And there's the huge amount of ships and missions for BC..

Never been much of a Star trek fan, but I did have a 3D shooter called 'Star Trek Voyager: Elite force' and it's expansion pack. The actual game was pretty average, but the in the expansion you could explore the Voyager, interact with the crew, operate systems and find a few easter eggs.

i quite Enjoy Star Trek : Legacy, nothing internal wise but can be quite fun pitting enterprise vs. enterprise, plus the graphics are nothing fancy so it runs on my rig. Another one i like for tactical gaming is Star Trek Armada, i don't know why but i enjoy it :icon_lol:

for my Trek kicks these days i fire up X3 and hop into one of several Trek ships i have :icon_lol: can be kinda fun...

when i get a new PC i'll be getting ST:O though, just to try it out :wiggle:

All time favorite is Armada. Legacy has to be my default ship combat game, especially with all the mods and extra ships i have for it. I just wish that someone would make an Armada III since Legacy is using the Armada engine. I'm a lifer on STO (primarily for the ships) but the newest additions in their Season 3 release is so much better than what the game originally launched with, although there are more than a few aspects that need work.

STO can be pretty too! :icon_lol:

i might have to find a copy of bridge commander, that screenie looks awesome... got a ship list and a link to some good mods? :icon_lol: i can never get enough Star Trek... hoping surveyors report comes in soon and i can buy my new PC for STO :icon_lol:

Ship list? my game is currently close to 14 Gb because of mods, so you might guess that the ship list would be about as long as the war in Iraq..

anyway, if you wish to have mods and ships, http://bridgecommander.filefront.com/files/ is the place to go to, and if you need help and see what is under progress, http://www.bc-central.com/forums/index.php

Oh, and if you like screenies, here's one more, and a link to the rest of my screenies..

Yup, BC now supports full HD thanks to latest Kobayashi Maru update, making these beauty shots possible!

Thanks TJPilot on the link to STExcalibur. Looks brilliant!

I had ST Accademy, Voyager, and tried STO. I am still wrapped up in X3 Terran Conflict (X3TC regular) and now Mass Effect 3 (came out last week). ME3 has me totally fascinated. Amazing.

STO is pretty cool. I got to the first part and finally out in a ship rescuing people from other ships that were dead in the water after a huge attack. It has a lot to offer! I cant believe what all it has in it.

Excalibur should be very interesting.

STO indeed has great potential, and they keep releasing new missions. And thanks to Foundry, players can now create missions of their own.

I still fall back to the game that started it all for me- Star Fleet Battles (Task Force Games), tho I put hundreds of hours playing/modding SFC:Orion Pirates but a game conversion for XP interoperability has halted my online playing of this game, and the fanboys at BC-Central killed my enjoyment of Bridge Commander tho I still maintain my modded bridges in case I someday decide to release them.

...Then there's Klingon Academy- the best trek shooter I've ever played. I still have it, still play it, and when I leave this world I plan on taking this game with me. It's even better modded.

...Y'all do know Star Wars: Galaxies went open source, right ? Been playing alot of that lately as a beta tester for a local server admin.
