Some Great European Music...

Hey all,

I have always been drawn to foreign languages, like German, French, Italian, Swedish, Hebrew, Japanese, etc.. Ive also been drawn to their respective music. Listening to streaming music at Swedish and French radio stations online is really wild.

With my advent of entering the iPod world and iPhone, I am now collecting some great tunes and some are from all over the world. Last night, I had a chance to find / discover Lorie of France. I purchased the album 2Lor en moi? (thats what its called). BRILLIANT!!!! She sings some great Pop music. (Fun, upbeat).

Some others are;

Music for Dreams; Vol 1. Great calming 'modern' Jazz from all over the world. Some wild french music in there like Flavia. (Compilation).

Carla Bruni; Deranger les pierres' (French) (more calm and relaxed, almost like soothing Jazz, heart felt).

they are a chinese band who is mostly popular in japan
their 2 biggest hits are a turkish folk song (freedom) and a cover of an american pop group's (coldplay)hit (clocks) produced by a british woman (sharon ozborne)that lives in america

Bill, I don't know what genres of Music you're into, but I'm pretty sure you'll find what you want. Especially pop music bands, of which Germany has a lot.

Any recommendations? Any groups that sing in German? Finding those are difficult here in the USA iTunes system.

Maybe Madsen can be a good start. Just use their Last.fm site to listen to some of their songs and to find similar artists.

I don't listen to them personally though. With the exception of Helge Schneider (jazz musician, genius and clown) I don't like bands singing in german at all.

in fact, when i put "eastern energy" onto my mp4 player, i purposely left that song off. i only mentioned it in this thread because most people seem to like it

Bill- do a search for Lara Fabian. She was born in Belgium but has been living in Canada for quite a few years now. In addition to being beautiful, she has a spectacular voice. Once you hear it, you don't forget it.

Here's a sampling- in this video, she sings one of Serge Lama's most popular songs, "Je suis malade", which means "I am sick". And of course, she's singing it in French

This song gives me chills each time I hear it....

Currently I am lost in Japanese nu-rock and post-rock sounds. They still have the insanity and creativity that the european and american music market gradually killed.

But some of the 'oldies' I still like because they were played 'live' and not mimed to the audience, miming allows the backroom boys to enhance the voice and extend the note duration as in the above or swell the music volume. So try this one (Seekers 1968) sorry they are not European, but it was recorded at Abbey Road.

My daughter the French scholar despises Carla Bruni for using celebrity status to push her songs.
And, you have to wonder how much we're influenced by the whole "package" of image.
I've heard Lara Fabian, but thanks to your link C9Gal, I am now entranced.
She positively smoulders...I can never listen again without being a victim of the "package".

I'm fine with the bland sound of european and american alternative and prog rock bands. :d

This year was an awesome one in terms of new music. Dredg, ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Billy Talent, Saosin, Taking Back Sunday...and I could go on and on...
Yet, the sledgehammer of them all is still missing: Amplifier's "The Octopus". It will make 2009 one of the best years ever in terms of music releases!
