sorry to be asking so many questions

I hate to ask so many questions but reinstalling FS9 on Windows 7 has brought up some issues and I just got started.First thing is on some of my addon planes, Bill Lyons Cub for free is one,the Vickers Wellesley and some others, when I bring up the GPS the GPS screen flashes unless the cursor is on the GPS, then it will stop flashing. The stock planes are all fine, at least the ones I've checked. This is just the screen on the GPS ,not the whole computer screen or any other popups.
Another thing which is minor is according to Bills readme if you hit / the pilot and passanger ,or at least the pilot should appear. I cleared the assignment for / which was assigned to spoilers but it still doesn't work.Any ideas
Again sorry for being a pest but I don't have anyone to turn too.

Put the assignment back in for / as spoilers. What Bill was saying was he tied the figures to the spoiler command. With out that command set you can not activate the feature.

No idea why the GPS is flashing but check the panel config for what GPS he used. If he did not use the default GPS (Likely) change it to that GPS.

ok thanks

I'll put the spoiler assignment back even though it doesn't makethe Pilot appear. Maybe the flashing has something to do with the quad core or it's a Windows7 thing. So far the planes wouldn't use gps real life.

well part of it worked

When I changed the spoiler command back it went to num/ rather than just / and that worked for the pilots.
As for the GPS I found it doesn't flash at night only in the daytime and when you hover over a switch it evenually stops.
Beats me ,I checked the panel config files for the planes that didn't have gps that flashed and the ones that flashed and could see no differance.

Just a stab in the dark...

If these GPS windows are popups I would try moving the GPS once it is opened. It could be a priority issue with the GPS and other gauges on the main panel.
Basically the W7 OS and your graphics card trying to figure out what to draw first and then making a mess out of it.

Have you tried assigning a compatibility mode to FS9? Right-click the fs9.exe in the main folder, then choose Properties > Compatibility tab. Check the top check-box and then select one of the XP modes. If it doesn't help, it's easy to reverse - just repeat the steps and uncheck the box you checked.

done all those things

I tried all the things mentioned ,it seem to have some connection to the views at the top, if I eliminate the panel the screen doesn't flash, then bring the panel back and the screen doesn't flash either.

Tom's suggestion reminds me of another possible thing to try. W7 comes with a feature called aero or something like that. If I recall correctly that is also activated or de-activated via a checkbox from the properties you get by right clicking the icon for FS on your desktop.

I know this is not a very precise description but I am not at a desktop at the moment. Maybe someone who is recognizes what I am talking about and can clear it up a bit.

Tom, I can't thank you enough for this little gem of advice.:salute:

I'm always toing and froing to my daughter's place (she very kindly allowed me to instal fs9 on her laptop which runs windows 7). Just recently, it wouldn't even open fs until I just made that little 'check' you describe above.

Bingo! Perfection!

Bravo Tom! :applause::wavey:

Suggestion..

This has been an interesting topic because some day I will be replacing my computer and going to Windows 7.

In the meantime, I was wondering if we can have a topic under the FS 2004 Tweaks and Tips Section that has all the recommended steps and suggestions for a painless install of FS9 under Win 7.0?

couldn't find Aero tab

I couldn't find an Aero tab under properties, I have the Windows XP SP2 tab checked and run as administrater ,also I takeback about taking out the panel then putting it back and the GPS doesn't flash ,I found with no panel and in VC panel as long as there is an icon for GPS the GPS won't flash, but in 2D most times the GPS panel flashes, but sometimes if you play around with views it doesn't.
Funny thing is it's only the GPS popup all other popups are fine.
But it does have something to do with the 2D panel.

Ok...I asked the lovely receptionist at the customer I am working at to let me take a quick look at the possible settings.

The one I was thinking of is called "Disable visual themes"

Right click the FS icon and select Properties
Click on the compatibility tab
Put a check mark in the box.
Click Ok

Try it out and if it does not work set it back.

Cheers

tried it no joy

I tried disableing visual themes , no difference. Like I said if you do away with the panel, then bring up the GPS with shift+4 it's fine, but when you bring back the 2D panel it flashes. It also doesn't flash in VC mode.Maybe it has something to do with the new computer I have. Also if you hover the mouse cursor anywhere on the panel it eventually stops flashing. But as soon as you move the mouse it starts flashing again.
The GPS is usable as you can see through the flashes or wait till it stops by hovering over a GPS button but it's annoying as heck.
This only happens with some(most not all) addon planes.

Well poop...I am out if ideas now.
I don't use the 2D panel myself, only one or two aircraft sans VC get to stay on my rig.
So for all I know this could very well be a more common issue.

guess I'll live with it

I installed outside of program files and everything ,maybe cause it's a quad core ,I dunno ,everything else works ok. Thanks to everyone who tried and help.

By the way are you running FS in FullScreen mode or in a window ??
Which ever it is the last suggestion would be to try the other one and see if it makes a difference.

Quad core should have nothing to do with it. I'd say most of us probably run something like that by now.

Cheers
Stefan

looks like you did it

I've always ran in full screen mode , so I switched to windows mode and the GPS flashing went away. Thankyou your a genius Stefan.
