Spitfire K5054 90th Anniversary Circumnavigation of the UK: May 2026

Spitfire K5054 TR9 positioning flight: Dean Forest Regional (EGDF) to Eastleigh/Southampton Intl. (EGHI) Part 2

Flying along The Solent on the way to Southampton Water. And the weather gradually improved during the flight.

11 Supermarine ramp.jpg
Flying along the River Itchen. The red arrow points to where the Supermarine Woolston flying boat ramp is located in reality. The next picture shows it in more detail.

12 Supermarine Woolston.jpg
See the upper arrow. The Supermarine Woolston flying boat ramp is a Grade II listed, historic concrete slipway on the River Itchen in Southampton, used from 1913 to 1940 for testing and launching iconic Supermarine flying boats and Schneider Trophy racers.

The lower arrow points to a 1:1 scale Spitfire silhouette in the cobblestones of the courtyard. Kit and I were there years ago on my Spitfire pilgrimage to the UK.

13 South Stoneham cemetary.jpg
Just before reaching the airport, off my left wing is the South Stoneham Cemetery where R. J. Mitchell was laid to rest.

14 curved approach to runway 20.jpg
Winds are out of the South so I swung around for a landing on Runway 20 at Eastleigh/Southampton (EGHI).

15 down just before the numbers.jpg
Touched down just before the numbers and close to the center line. Rolling out and slowing down.

Parked at Southampton. Not a perfect parking job, but I finally made it here to the starting point of our UK adventure.

The 152 mile flight was completed in 46 minutes at an average speed of 172 knots.
I had 32.5 gallons of fuel on board at shutdown. The Merlin engine used 68 gallons per hour.

During each of the nine flights the K5054 Spitfire was escorted briefly by other more modern RAF and/or British aircraft, commemorating each decade of aviation advancement since the first flight of K5054.

Oh my ... where have I been Melo ... hope it's not too late to jump in? I'll check the hanger for something British and see what I can find ...

For anyone who wants to upgrade their UK airport/airfield scenery for these flights or any other, UK2000 have a great VFR Airfields scenery package available for FSX. Although this is an old product based on the airfields as they were about 20 years ago, it contains no less that 226 airfields/airports/airbases generally modelled to quite a good standard and is very good value at just EUR23.99.

My apologies I've posted the latest leg 7 Part 1 and 2 in the wrong place, should be in the pireps thread. can an admin move them? Or should I re-post in the pireps thread then delete these here?

EDIT: I moved the posts for you. T_K

Does anyone know where I can find an FS Spitfire XII please? That's the first Griffon engined version with clipped wings and a 4 bladed prop, and there were only two squadrons which flew them.

I've looked everywhere but can only find a YouTube vid of one, which says is an FS9 conversion, but I can't even find that one either! :(

Melo found an FS9 clipped wing Spitfire XIV for me, one of A F Scrub's models, and it works in OK FSX.

I'm attempting to repaint it as a XII from 41 Sdqn. No-one will be able to count the prop blades when the Griffon's running, and if I don't take any pics from underneath, no-one will notice the symmetric radiators. :)

After a long and tedious repaint I now have my quasi Spitfire XII. :)

It's not perfect, but it's good enough for Government work, if you ignore the symmetric radiators and the 5 bladed prop. I'll need all that Griffon's power to catch up with the rest of you, and I'll carry on with leg 03 tomorrow.
