Guys and Gals,

I am looking for a good freeware or payware MK XVIII Spitfire like Jim Beasley's. I am looking for the five blade Griffen Spit.... Any direction would be helpfull.

Thanks,
Ron

Best Griffon-engined Spitfire I would recommend is the RealAir Mk XIV payware version. Just delightful, in all respects save for the fact that I, like you, prefer the less common bubble-canopy versions such as the Mk 22 and Mk 24. Alas, no high-quality version of those exists. Plane Design's payware bubble-top Mk LF 16 is gorgeous, but has a Merlin engine - not a Griffon.

In the end, I get my later-version bubble-canopy jollies in the latter of the two - and with a few very nice repaints out there (alas, on avsim), it's a delightful plane. I wrote Plane Design a few months back to get a feeler on whether they'd contemplate a Seafire MK XVIII or Spitifire 22/24 - they appreciated the idea, but felt they were "Spitfired out", which is understandable in the high-detail world of FS payware.

'Hope that helps!

Best I can do is to say that A.F.Scrub does a very good freeware PRXIX. Doesn't have a bubble canopy though, it has a malcolm hood, but does have a Griffon driving a 5 blade rotol prop.

Hello Rob,

Thanks for pointing out the AH versions. I somehow missed those. Any repaints for those here at SOH - ideally, the Mk 22?

thanks!

I highly recommend the AH Griffin pack as well, and it is currently the closest examples you will have to Jimmy's Mk.18. I don't think a repaint of Jim's Spitfire on the Mk.22 airframe would look all that out of place.

(To mine I added the flight dynamics of the RealAir Mk.XIV, and the soundset by Bradburger).

Thanks guys... I will try the AH. Were do I get that sound pack of the Griffen John?

Ron

PS. John... I see you do a lot of paints. Do you plan on doing one of Jim's Spitfire?

Thanks....

Try getting the JustFlight Spitfires - you get all 4 Aeroplane Heaven Spitfire packs for $30 US... much cheaper than getting them from AH...

I've got the AH Spitfires and the Mk XIX is my favorite of the bunch. I'm using dcc's Griffon sounds with it.

Actually the Griffon powered Spitfires are my favorite WWII fighters, just ahead of P-38s.

Best Griffon-engined Spitfire I would recommend is the RealAir Mk XIV payware version.

I agree to that!
Quite tempting flight model and very nice acceleration effects in the VC that drag your head to the seat's headrest once you let the mighty Griffon roar!
Also nice sound effects of the fuselage structure when pulling G's.
Very juicy soundset too.

Just two little disadvantages:
- No 2D panel (I made my custom widescreen 2D BMP via screenshot of the VC),
- slightly 'greenish' default textures - but there's a lot of repaints on the RAS XIV out there.

I wish RealAir had bulit the Merlin-powered IX in FS2004 too and only the FSX version...

Regards,
Markus.

Goodness - I had forgotten how much fun the AH model was ... :) I must say, can you imagine how amazing a paint like this on the Mk 22, by Morton, or some of the other fine WWII repainters would look? Mmmmm, weathering .... :jump:

I agree... what a great paint. I hope someone does Beasley's too.

New Griffon soundset, I've not tried it.

CFS2/CFS3/FS2002/FS2004 RR Griffon Sound. This sound is not tested under FSX but it should have no problems at all.
