Still Piddlin' ... "The Grizzly"

Willy always wanted this one and he and Moses03 have been kind enough to help out with some hard to find reference material. Fliger_747 is assisting with the FM and Scott Thomas is doing the panel and gauges. Looks like the sounds will have Lawdog beginnings. I am looking for a texture artist for bare metal work as the two models of the Beech Model 28 were never painted.

This is a new WIP of just 16 days, nearly full time at it, so lots to do yet. The question is can we beat the Easter bunny, 3 months. :running:

Designated the Beechcraft Model 28, the big, twin-tailed attack aircraft was known to the United States Army Air Force as the XA-38. It also was named the Destroyer and, more popularly, the "Grizzly".

Here are a couple of links for more info on this fascinating aircraft:

I am hesitant to share anything this early in the project but, you know, you guys can take it ... can't you? :wiggle:

EDIT: I should mention that all textures are temporary except the tire tread donated by Manfred Jahn.

That looks great Milton, and yeah, I can take it........I think...:applause:

Careful with the "pointy", lol...:costumes:

Milton, is that the same cannon used it the B-25(?) forgot the model ...

Looks fantastic Milton :applause:

With that cannon in the nose ya sure wouldn't want to cut in front of it :icon_lol:

Pete.

That is one wild looking beast Milton. Nice craftsmanship.

:ernae: :applause: :ernae:

I havent seen this model of plane before.

OOOOOOOWWEEEEEEE! There was a thread over in the CFS2 forum just the other day with someone inquiring about this beast. That 75mil canon will tear some light ships to pieces!

If one of the really good painters don't step up to the plate and take on this beast, I will offer my services...such as they are. FS2004 bare metal is new to me, but I think I have the jist of it. CFS2 bare metal....now that I have pegged as good as it gets.

I just took Lawdog's B-29 sound pack and modded the sound config for a 2-engine set up.....not that I am anxious to fly the Griz or anything.

OBIO

The 75mm is the same caliber as the one in the B-25H. But I think the actual gun is a different model that was specific to the Grizzly. Like the A-10, the XA-38 was designed around the gun.

Obio, I did the same thing with Lawdog's sounds already for it. The main reason that the XA-38 never made it to production was that it used the same engines as the B-29 which had production priority.

Hopefully, we'll find someone to do a CFS 2 conversion for it. I'm wanting to take it out on a ship busting mission. Is there AI trains in CFS 2? I did love tearing up locomotives in CFS 1 and CFS 3. I was always more of a ground attack kind of CFS pilot than a dog fighter. :d

When I saw the title of this thread, I was thinking Rutan's Grizzly. As much as I liked that plane, I like this one even more. That looks awesome! I know someone who does spectacular bare metal work, I'll enquire as to whether or not this is something he would be interested in.

Having said that, it's the What If schemes I'm already thinking about. O.D. over gray, a N.A. desert scheme, some P.T.O. Marine schemes, a Korean all black night intruder scheme, etc. Thanks for sharing so early.
:ernae:

LOL Thanks y'all. Sundog, my sentiments exactly.

Willy, OBIO, yes, I plan to make the gmax source available and I will do an FS2002 version so that a CFS2 conversion is likely more easily done. :jump:

Monk, well, many of those days were 12-16 hours, and borrowing parts from the Howard 500, the A-26, and D18S makes the tough stuff go a bit faster. :mixedsmi:

WH, I suspect Bomber_12th is up to his eyes in his own project work, but you are right, his work is excellent. :)

Pointy, Willy has it correct, the B25H used the cannon as is stated on the placard of the cannon I posted at the top.

Lionheart, thank you Sir ... I still have mesh tweaks to do on the exterior but she is getting close.

tcreed, yes, I am kind of a gear nut so I put lots of attention into its appearance. Manfred Jahn was kind enough to lend his tread design ... they match of great for what this beast used.

Now, I really just wanted to share this project because it is so much fun ... and this kind of energy is needed to make it all worthwhile. The FM flies great as I used the Howard 500 FM as a starting point. Numbers are very similar except the Grizzly is faster. I am hoping that Fliger_747 will have the time to tweak it up just for us. :)

I have an eleven page article scanned from a 1978 magazine that I will gladly share for those interested. Just PM or email me for the link.

Yes it was basicly the same 75mm that was in the B-25H. The differance being M4 in the XA-38 had a feed system for automatic loading, and the B-25H M4 was breech loaded manually by a crew member, (very slow and akward) this made the B-25H M4 less than effective, this and it's mere 21 rounds. The M4 75mm in the B-25H weighed 760 Lbs. Note: check out the specs above and the improvements made on the M4 gun package including number of rounds and firing rate and overall weight. Like going from a muzzule loader to a breech loaded rifle.

Sundog is right, this will be a great plane for "what if" paint jobs. If the Grizzly's development time lines had been just a little earlier I'm pretty sure it would've been used in Korea. Nice armed recce platform with that 75mm "can opener" gun in the nose, would really do a number on vehicles and trains.
