Still snowy is FS

At what FS date does the general snow cover go away and get replaced by the brown scrub? I still have full snow cover and can't remember if I tried out a third party ground snow cover as a scenery add-on. I though it would have happened by now.

I don't have a date to tell you, as I don't know. I do know that in some places I am getting all grass and shrubs, in others (like up in the Idaho mountains) I am still getting full snow cover, and in others (like South Dakota) I am getting a mix of grass and snow. This is my first winter-to-spring transition in FS2004 and I find it neat how the sim displays ground texturing that is dependent up on your elevation and latitude.

Not happy about it personally. In real life we haven't had any snow here (Wisconsin) in a long time.
But, in the sim world we have full snow cover. I have to put the time ahead into May to make the snow go away.
Not too realistic if you ask me.

Well that's the Bill Gates bug .. lol.
BTW .. if Bill Gates was to make a new FS .. seem's it will be different and more realistic cause suddenly he take care of climate changes :)

Where in Wisconsin do you live Tom? I know down here in Delavan we haven't had snow in 2 1/2 months.

If I remember right, the four major seasons change pretty close to the actual solstice times. That being said, FS9 actually does 12 "seasons" that change the maps slightly around the 19th-20th of each month.

EDIT: come to think of it, I think the 12 season changes was an addon. Let me look through my stuff.

EDIT 2: FS9 uses a single seasons.bgl file to control which seasonal texture variation is used. The file uses 12 different seasonal "maps" which provide the geographic coverage for each of the texture variations. These variations are winter, hard winter (contains snow), spring, summer, and fall. The maps change about the 19th of each month, so map 1, for January, is used from 19 December to 19 January. These maps have a fairly coarse resolution, making it difficult to obtain precise results.

There is this file (bgl) by Scott Smart that addresses the snow placement in North America with a bit more refinement.

From his readme:
One complaint about the FS9 seasons is the distribution of snow cover in
North America. This scenery addon uses data on snow coverage from the
US NOAA agency to modify the default snow region distribution. The NOAA
data are computed daily from satelite imagery. For this project I took
snow coverage data for 12 specific days, generally sampling around the
1st of each month. This data was merged with the default data for the
remaining seasons (without change) to create this bgl file.

Have to agree with the unrealistic portrayal. Real Weather does pretty good, but that has no effect on the coded season dates (for the ground textures) that FS uses. Selecting a month that reflects the ground seems to be the only way to match up oddities in weather such as the snowless conditions you guys are having. For me, it's just the opposite right now. The FS ground textures have changed to a pretty much pre-spring look, even though it has been snowing here for that last couple of days.

I just thought there were basically 3 FS used, winter, summer, and spring and fall would be about the same. I guess I never took much notice. I had tried the massive snow cover and iced over lakes sceneries for this past winter which helped the effect pretty well and thought I might have forgot to un-do them. It's hard to be a forgetful god, you know when you can't quite keep up-to-date with how you're running the world?

I'll keep my eyes peeled for the first green golf courses that show up.
