Storm Damage

Well these storms have rocked the East coast. We lost power 2 weeks ago from around 1:00pm till around midnight. It was 90 degs but we didn't loose it because of the storms. Thank goodness I had a generator. They replaced the transformer across the street. This past weekend was a mess. In New Kent County alone they have over 90% of their customers with out power and it has been in triple numbers on the temperature side. From Friday till today they said over 800,000 customers have been without power and some are still without it. They have opened up a few schools as a cooling place for the public to go to. Va. Power has advised some customer will not get power fixed till some time next week. It cost more to run a generator 24/7 than to just use electrical power. I know we have members across the nation, have any of you guys run into any of these storms or damage.

Nothing here in Texas....hot and dry. I did hear the storm that hit you and others, Moe & standds, referred to as an "inland hurricane" due to the strength and ferocity of it. Take care during the recovery!

I bought a natural gas powered 20KW generator and installed an automatic transfer switch about fourteen years ago mainly because my late brother was terrified of losing power to his support systems while he was dying from liver cancer.

Although never once during his final years was it ever used, five times since I've lost power here for anywhere from just a few hours to a few days. It has proven to have been worth the expense, because loosing just the food stored in my chest freezer represents many hundreds of dollars!

I've been most fortunate to have been spared any property damage during these really wicked storms over the past few years. I hope and pray that my good luck continues!

Serious damage in the Buckeye

Last Friday when the storm roared through Ohio and the Midwest it did some serious damage . There are still several people out of power . I had four trees fall on my house . All were pine(the biggest I've been told was a White Pine 80-90x approx 2 1/2' ). There were seven holes in the roof , three of which limbs penetrated the ceiling inside in three different rooms . The worst unfortunately was a spare bedroom which had my PC , printer , Cable Modem(TW) , router , a couple of external HD's , 27" monitor . The PC took the blunt of the damage . Water leaking in (it was pouring down). There was rolled insulation(6") plus blown insulation on top of it . So far I've salvaged the Cable Modem and the router and have internet access from my wife's laptop . The adjuster from the insurance company possibly might be here early next week . I'm retired but a friend who I use to work with is going to try and salvage my HD on my PC and maybe a few other things . Besides contents I'm looking at a new roof , eve spout , some siding , and practically re frame a bedroom with walls and ceiling . Carpet in two rooms . Where I am curious is how they are going to handle the electronic gear I've lost .

Bottom Line : I'm safe , my family is safe and this house can be repaired . I am sincerely sorry for the people who have lost far more than I have . My thoughts and prayers are with them . I'm starting to get serious flight sim withdraw already !
:banghead:

Thinking about my next system:icon_lol:

(sorry if all this has already been discussed here - had a ruff week-no AC in 97 to 100 degree heat was ruff) Electric back on yesterday after 5 1/2 days .)

Also NO MORE trees around the house in falling range-had the tree service cut them down(on my tab of coarse)

More damage pics

Forgive poor quality pics , they were from my IPhone but overall it did a good job . My wife and daughter used their cameras and took the majority . The inside pics made me a little queezy . Those to follow . I don't mean to bombard all with my present depressed state , just venting off a little anxiety and depression . One of my sons and my daughter live in the area and came right over right after the storm and my son and son-in-law cut off the limbs just at the area they were into the roof to get tarps down, they really worked their butts off until 1100-1130 at night . NOTE: Little or no tap roots on these damn pines(Sorry , don't know trees that well but to me they have a very poor root structure , they look like they just sit on top and spread across)

Again , my thoughts and prayers are with all of those people who are worse off than I am .

That is my next investment after my house gets put back together . I have a natural gas hookup on the deck in the back of the house and probably 10' away from is the main electrical hookup going into the house to the main electrical panel . A perfect place for a NG generator . 20KW should run everything including Central Air , fridge etc , right ?

Yes, it will be enough to handle pretty much the entire load from a 3 BR house, including heat and/or airconditioning, especially if you opt to use their "Managed Whole House Coverage" transfer switch.

This unique system will automatically "load shed" selected circuits whenever a potential overload condition is detected (such as a deep-freezer). Every so often, it will then cycle those circuits back on, and shed another selected circuit. That way, everything is serviced with power...

This is the unit I bought: Residential Guardian Products Guardian Series 20kW

It is available in either gasoline engine or natural/LP gas versions. I chose the natural gas version for two reasons. First there's no need to periodically drain and change gasoline. The most important for me though is that the NG version starts nearly instantly, whereas the gasoline version takes up to two minutes to start and stabilize.
