Montoya on the pole. Means the big one in turn 1 lap 1!
JK - don't think JPM on the pole means anything in terms of the race as Talledega is an impound race meaning the cars are locked down after qualifying until the race tomorrow. Only those cars needing to make the field on time would qualify as fast as they can - don't know if JPM is one of those - the top 35 that are already in the field for talledega generally opt to qualify in race trim using qualifying as a bit of practice as there is no formal practice or car adjustments allowed before the race. Now Montoya will have to race in a car set up for qualifying and then in the first few pit stops try to "find" - by adjustment - race trim. Expect to see Montoya go backwards in the race and then progress forward depending upon how well he and his crew do adjusting the car.
Currently in the points.... There aren't any other Earnhardt-Ganassi drivers that are ahead of Montoya....
But I realize it's a "no-win" situation for Montoya. For example, if he didn't qualify for the race, then folks would be saying "see, even with a merger, Montoya is no good".
I just checked and JPM is 15th in the points so I would have expected him to qualify in race trim. If so he's fast - it'll be real interesting to see what happens tomorrow. Could be a JPM win - he's been strong on the superspeedways before - just didn't have a lot of folks willing to work with him and push him to the front - maybe he has the respect now.
Montoya got 20th. Scott Speed was actually 5th and Max Papis was a couple positions or so ahead of Montoya. But as you have seen weird things happen at Talledega.
Montoya had a fast car. But he did get caught up in a wreck and so got 20th. The "trick" at Talledega is that you've got 160 laps to figure out who you can work with and plan how you gonna get to the front all the while avoiding a wreck and then you've got 28 laps of racing trying to be in the right place at the end also trying to avoid the wreck.
