Tangier Island (KTGI)

Does anyone know of good scenery of this great little airport and Island? It is a fascinating island field on the Chesapeake that can only be reached by ferry boat or small airplane; Haven't managed to turn up much...

Just took a look at it in Google Earth. . . .FS9 has more on the airport than the real thing, lol. The airport proper appears mostly vacant, save what appears to be maybe two hangars. The rest of the Island has two long strings of houses and an abundance of marina's.
The airport would take very little time to do, even if you added some extra eye-candy, the real labor would be in placing the houses and marina's. I could adjust what FS9 has and add enough to spruce up the area, but it wouldn't be custom made (Instant Scenery).

I used to go there a lot as a youngster...Every summer my boss and I took a working vacation on his oyster boat to Smith Island, just north of Tangier. It was a provisions and fuel stop for us....

It has become quite the tourist attraction now, with wine tastings of local Va. and Md. vinyards..Mostly Prince Michael of Leon Va.

I was going to fly in there once till the engine quit at 5000 ft just off Annapolis Md......LOL

Smith Island has no land field, and still gets their daily mail by boat......

This area of the bay is well known for its fleet of Skipjack sailing oyster fleet still in use ....

I visited Smith Island almost 30 years ago. As I recall, there wasn't a whole lot there, pretty much a fishing community and little else.

After adding some hangars, vehicles, stores, hotels, various buildings, fences, barrels, crates, ground equipment and homes. . .it still lacks the charm I assume this Island has from ground level. It would take a complete redo of the landclass and mesh to make it even close to the real deal. FS9 default landclass sucks as we all know and so where the inland waterways are in real life. . .in FS9 they're 20ft deep ravines. It takes a lot of imagination to look at the FS9 version and conjure what it must really look like.

You couldn't be more right, Falcon. I guess my hope would be for someone with a significant skill at small airfield/mesh/landclass/custom autogen/phototexturing design would pick it up as a project; But one can always wish, y'know?

I would love to have it..But I can only add ez scenery..never done mesh or the likes...:banghead:

Yea, I know for someone who does this all the time it would be a relatively simple process, I'm just not there yet. I'm like Harleyman, Instant Scenery is my limit for scenery design which can be very effective in most cases, but for an area like this or Plum Island which have very specific architecture and a certain feel for the area they reside in, it almost requires custom scenery to make it come to life.

Agreed....It would 'pop' if it was done by a skilled scenery developer....One can always hope; I will be flying down there sometime soon and will grab a bunch of photos....maybe give it a try...

If i could figure out a user friendly LC program for Fs9 id have a crack at it but my best LC knowledge is in FSX with its LC design. I just wish a program like say FSX's ADE could be applied to Fs9 or even kml.

That's 'cuz you're missing CRABS!!! :costumes:

I forget what Delaware flying club it was that used to sponsor a fly-away to Tangier a few weeks before Christmas every year. I think it was called the "Holly Run" or something along those lines. The purpose was to bring Christmas holly, boughs, etc. to the island.
