its 8:20pm PST...im listening to McClellan on my scanner and calfire T85,and T86 (with Hoser at the helm) are doing night time (obviously) touch and goes....why in the world would they be doing this?..they dont fly fires at night..so why fly the tankers at night for training?..i cant post on www.airtankers.com anymore so cant ask there.....but im really curious...

Just guessing that things are the same your side of pond as ours...
IIRC if a pilot holds a full instrument rating then a certain amount of night landings per month/year are needed to keep rating current
between 'check rides'.

Pretty much what Pete said, they do it to keep their currency. Also, they fly at night when heading home from an upstate fire occasionally. So they do fly at night, even though they don't fight fire at night. Certain bases they will fly to they'll need to fly ILS approaches and the like as well.

A couple years ago they did the 'spring training' down here at Hemet. It's usually at MCC, so I made sure to go down and watch. Grabbed some night shots.
