Technical Question For Painters (please?)

Having upgraded my PC a while back, I'm once again having a go at large formation flying with WW2 heavy bombers.

However, even with a major overclock to almost 4mHz, I can't keep more than 12 - 14 B17s in the air (A2A) with crashing FSX.

I remember someone here suggested reducing the size of the dds files, but I didn't note which ones. How do I know which texture files in an addon aircraft to alter?

Any other help with this much appreciated.
 
for the a2a birds its just about all the textures that have _t, _spec or _bump

so for example

b17g_**_t
b17g_**_t_spec
b17g_**_t_bump

(where ** is a number)

Thanks. Being as the ac will never be seen close-up, are there any textures that can be removed completely while still showing main colours and markings?

I'd also wondered about about swapping out the aircraft after flight, with a low poly AI aircraft, using the converter in FSRecorder?

Anyone know where to get WW2 AI aircraft?
 
okay guys, next question....?

Got 30+ B17s now in formation at 22,000ft using AI, but no con trails. Can someone briefly explain how to put the effect in the AI aircraft?

i found I could just ciopy another a/c effects/smoke settings etc.
 
Sorry guys, one more question...

When 'saving as' in DXTbmp, should I be using the option ACE DXT1 for the smallest file sizes?
