Ted Cooks Hampden

Pat Pattle

SOH-CM-2025
Thought I'd post this piccie on a new thread now that it's not the Alphasim Hampden that we have!

This is the first appearance of it in game, just to see how it looks. Lots of tweaking to do but it's all there. Ted has detailed the inside too, it has a full crew cramped inside that narrow fuselage.

That looks great, some others that look promising at Ted's site, mmm Hawker biplanes anyone?,thanks to Ted Cook and of course to you Pat for all your efforts to bring us another toy for our toy boxes.

she's looking good Clive. This is a much needed British aircraft Pat. No rush mate. We've all learned that in CFS3 modelling patience is a virtue:salute:

Looks beautiful..
Bravo..
:salute: :salute: :salute:

Were not the Hampden's pulled from front line service in 1942?? Bomber Command..
When the newer British and American supplied bombers were available to the RAF..

...hmmmm, maybe this one will steal me away from my Wimpy ....but I dunno --Lookin' awful good so far -(and we needed one):engel016:

Yes Owen they were withdrawn, like the Whitley and and gain like the Whiltely four squadrons were given to Coastal Command through 1943 as a long-range torpedo bomber, (the Hampden TB Mk I with a Mk XII torpedo in an open bomb bay and a single 500 lb (230 kg) bomb under each wing) and as a maritime reconnaissance aircraft. No. 144 Squadron RAF and No. 455 Squadron RAAF were involved in the escort of Arctic Convoy PQ-18 operating out of Soviet airbases and left their 23 aircraft in the USSR afterward. These were then used by the 3rd Squadron of the 24 MTAP (Anti-shipping Wing) of the Soviet Navy until at least 1943.

Meanwhile back to Bomber Command:

The aircraft did find a niche for itself in Bomber Command as an ideal platform for carrying aerial mines. Many 'Gardening' sorties were flown in enemy waters by Hampdens and they continued in this role for the remainder of its bomber service.

The first two VCs awarded to Bomber Command personnel were to Hampden crew-members. The first was to Flight Lieutenant RAB Learoyd of No 49 Squadron in August 1940 for his leadership of a successful attack on a viaduct on the important Dortmund-Ems canal during the night of 12th/13th August 1940. The second was, unusually, not to a pilot but a wireless operator/gunner. Sergeant John Hannah was awarded the medal for extinguishing a fire in a Hampden of No 83 Squadron he was flying in which had been badly damaged during an attack on Antwerp during the night of 15th/16th September 1940

Thanks for the info on the Hampden..

Hampden

Beautiful Machine, Clive. There really are some fanatastic a/c in ETO! Interested in the lighter coloured overalls your pilot has.

That's my attempt at the pre/early war white flying overalls as per the left hand image - don't know about that beard though!! It'll be in the next BoB installment but if anyones intersested I'll upload it. They don't look so grey normally.

This one will hopefully be available with files to make it suitable for the Stock cfs3, ETO and BoB installs

Hi Clive,

I'd be interested in your pre war pilot.

wonder if that picture of Douglas Bader (on the right) is pre or post accident.

regards Rob.

I've attached the .dds. It's pretty crude and he still sports the wrong life jacket, harness and Parachute. I'ver tried alpha-ing offending parts out but you get odd results.

Thanx, Clive -do you think there were any pilots dolled up like this in the very early MTO?

The 112 Squadron link is quite fascinating... Gladiators in Greece -P-40's -Spits' V and IX's -Hurry IId's
the lot!:applause:
