The Best Clipper

Can someone recomend the best Clippers, for FS 2004, either the Boeing B-314, the Martin 130 preferred, or the Sikorsky S - 40 or the S - 43 , payware or freeware? i am hopeful to get interiors and cabins, as well as good aircraft and virtual cockpit ....for FS9...thanks for any suggestions. I have seen some in research but would really appreciate advise if anyone has the time :) I love those planes ... :)

Bill Lyons has done a very nice S-43 as part of the Golden Hawaii package, which is now available for free at Avsim (cc8ghf.zip). While there, get the C-130 by Jens Kristensen as well (m130_v10.zip). Mike Stone did a freeware B-314 without VC, and there's one payware B-314, available in two versions:

http://secure.simmarket.com/pilots-boeing-b314-the-clipper-online-v2.phtml

And the 'light' version: http://secure.simmarket.com/pilots-boeing-b314-the-clipper-online-le-version.phtml

George Diemer did a nice Sikorsky VS-44, which you can find at Flightsim.com (vs44aat.zip and vs44aea.zip)

He also did the S-40, but without a VC, try 's40nc80v.zip', also at Flightsim.com.

:)

also, try Jens' Martin 130 at avsim. nice VC and flies in FSX.

FSX and FS2004 Martin 130 Clipper. The Martin 130 flying boat were used for Pan American for the first airliner service across the Pacific Ocean. The route was San Francisco - Manila via Hawaii, Midway Island, Wake Island and Guam. Only three M130s were built, and NC14716 'China Clipper' was the first, serving with PanAm from 1935 to 1942, when it was taken over by the U.S. Navy. The model works with FS2004, FSX and FSX SP2.

I want to thank you both VERY much , that was so nice of both of you to share all that, and just what i was looking for. If those do not have the full interiors i see in my dreams i will see about making them if the makers will give permission, i just love those planes a lot and have memories that keep that love alive, (i am a bit older than some here :)) and saw seaplanes in active service and always have recalled that ....

i wondered about that beautiful plane by Jen, i read about it and looked at it, but i have my main install in FX9...will it work in that? i also have X but have not instaled it yet.....as i am studying a ton of the X9 mods )450 entries in my secenery library and a full hangar :).......

but i will certainly dl and look at her, what a lovely job Jen did.

thanks again guys, i am very touched and grateful.

I wish one of our expert tweakers could adjust the odd texture mapping on the Bill Lyons S-43 so it would be easier to do repaints. I tried to do a 1941 Navy JRS-1 and it was a no-go. The textures are shared by various dissimilar parts of the plane. :frown: Guess Bill didn't want anybody repainting his stuff.

Yeah, that is a shame. I did a couple new paints for the plane...actually just replacements for the two that come with the Golden Hawaii package...to give the plane a better bare metal look. Those shared texture mapping thingies have killed a number of reskinning projects for me.

Do you have a link for your S-43 repaints, please, Obio?

There's a slightly earlier S-38 available as well.

If you don't mind no VC, Mike's B314 is extremely nice when combined with Ken Mitchell's panel.

I shined the S43 up a bit and changed the "decal sheet" up to make a Merc Air version a long time ago. But as for an actual repaint, I ran into the same problem Tarpsbird did.

Hi,

you might want to have a look at this page at the California Classic website:

http://www.calclassic.com/b314.htm

You can download Mike Stones plane and Ken Mitchell's panel there as well as a replacement FDE that includes updated flight dynmics, detailed handling notes and extensive background information.

Best regards,
Volker

A little addendum to my previous post: If you get the file 'vcb-vs44.zip' and install it you can use the keypad to look around the interior of George Diemer's Sikorsky VS-44. :)

If you like British flying boats, there are a lot by mr. Kristensen at Avsim:

Short Singapore I : s5_v10.zip

Short S.8 Calcutta: s8_v10.zip

Short S.17 Kent: s17_v2.zip

Short Empire: empire20.zip

Short S.25V Sandringham: sand_v20.zip

Short S.45 Solent: sol_v20.zip

All will work in Fs2004, just be sure to select the right sim when running the installer.

The last three Short 'boats' were based on the Sunderland WW2 RAF Flying boats; Stuart Green did a nice model of one of those:
http://www.domicilium.com/peveril/hangar/planes/sunderland.htm

:)

Before the war the only Clipper we were aware of was the Martin "China Clipper". The Boeing 314 came out late and was mostly known for carrying President Roosevelt around to meet Churchill.
As far as British ones, there was one that carried a small, twin float airplane on top that served as a extra gas tank. It would use up it's spare gas and then fly back to Great Britain. It was the only attempt to get clean across the Atlantic. That's as I remember it.

Pan American Airways used the Clipper name starting with the Sikorsky S40 and continued it's use thru the later flying boats (S42, M130, B314, etc) and then continued to call it's land based airliners Clippers until the airline folded in the 90s. Eventually, Clipper became it's radio callsign much as Imperial/BOAC/British Airways uses Speed Bird.

http://www.panam.org/default1.asp

click on history, then Clipper Names for a complete list of every aircraft Pan Am had that carried the Clipper name.

You're talking about the Mercury/Maia 'Mayo' (names of the planes, not types) combination, was done to get the airmail delivered,
the floatplane 'Mercury' sat on top of the Shorts 'C' class 'Maia', the two lifted off joined together, then the floatplane cast off from the flying boat

here you go, more info ---> http://www.plimsoll.org/Southampton/FlyingBoats/BMANCtoImperialAirways/MaiaMercuryexperiment.asp

Ferry thanks so much for that post about the VS-44. and the interiors, that looks just like what i was looking for, much appreciated, and i do have some of the Shorts in my hangar but will study that list and get the rest, thanks so much.

I found a great page with a whole series of different skips for the Clipper:

PanAmPacific Clipper textures by Wayne Tudor and Dale Deluca are available at www.avsim.com

filename is paab314.zip (1.2 mb)

PanAm Yankee Clipper textures by Wayne Tudor and Dale Deluca are available at www.avsim.com

filename is paa_yc.zip (1.3 mb)

BOAC Boeing 314 textures by Wayne Tudor and Dale Deluca are available at www.avsim.com

filename is boacb314.zip (1.2 mb)

a great sound package for Mike's Clipper here:

Re Mike's 314, his hangar is closed so that link for his panel should be Avsim here:

or California Classics as noted above...thanks so much to all for all this great help....

Mike also did a :9PBY 5-A

thanks again for all the help

George Diemer's Sikorsky S-38s and S-39 for FS2004 are not to be missed if you like flying boats. He even has an S-38 in PAA colors.

That panel isn't Mike's, that's why I copied the Flightsim.com entry above the Avsim entry. Mike and Tom Allensworth had a "disagreement" years back, and as a result, you won't find any of Mike's original files on AvSim. But most of them are on Flightsim, and I have copies of just about everything he did as well.:applause:
