The challenges of Phase 3: "Dicta Stachel"

As we near the close of Beta testing (well, we may or may not be... but I'm not tellin' ya'!! ;) ), I just wanted to lay out some advice for all of you that have been paitently waiting with us, and for us. You will be rewarded with some of the most realistic, gut-wrenching, exciting and sometimes frustrating air combat the home simmer has yet to see. But with that, you must understand, as some have asked already, OFF is NOT an arcade shooter where you're going to rack-up 100's of kills in a 6 month period. Unlike Phase 2, which had WWII AI flying WWI planes, Phase 3 matched WWI optimized AI with optimized WWI FM's and allowed the computer a much more balanced and evenly distributed fighting platform. They are not to be taken lightly at any level, and are killers waiting for fresh meat.

So with that in mind....

1. Follow Ditca Boelcke. The basic rules of combat any pilot whether Hun, Krumpet, Frog or Yank, should know front to back. Whenever I don't apply these rules... I die.

2. Remain cautious, and paitent. There is no doubt a sense of urgency you will feel during combat with Phase 3. It will challenge every bit of aggression you have in you. You WILL see squadmate burst into flames, and die. You WILL see aces attack aces and die, and you WILL see your assigned protection targets attacked while you try to fend off the enemy. Remain paitent at all times. If you don't... refer to rule 1.

3. Allow ample time for the mission to develop. Try to avoid using warp, it ruins the fun of forming up, gaining altitude and going over the mud in a group. In fact, it ruins the whole game. Because Aces are in a seperate flight, they will fly their assigned route around the drome prior to heading to the target, you too have the same route however, warping skips you through it and you loose site of the Aces. Refer to rule #2, if not followed... back to rule #1.

4. Keep your Situational Awareness as your number 1 priority. There is nothing more important in a Combat sim as SA!!! That means you know where you are, where the enemy is and their relative position to you! Do NOT LOOSE THAT! Flying MMP or any Multiplayer situation, that point is drilled into you with reckless abandon. Phase 3 is much like flying online. The AI is VERY good and will not think twice about trying to confuse you with specific maneuvers and tactics. Good sense of SA will keep you alive... again refer to rule#2.... if not follow... #1.

5. Plan your escape route before combat is engaged. Know where you are, where to run, where to land in an emergency, and what the terrain is. Where are the lines? How do I get out of this? How do I get home? In Phase 3, you CAN use the mountains as cover, the trees to block their shot... etc. Realize everything around you can either be your friend, or your enemy. Duck behind that farmhouse if you are being chased, or slide into a valley to build-up speed for a tight rudder turn. The combat is from sky to ground. Again... rule #4... rule #2... rule#1.

6. If attacking ground targets... follow a pattern of cover, get in, hit the target and GET OUT!! Don NOT linger. A pattern of cover can be trees, buildings, the sun, whatever, but do not stand over the target, and then dive on it. The AA is deadly over targets and will make swiss cheese out of you. You want to save your ammo and crate for a fight, not give it up in an attack of a balloon or hangar.

7. Lastly, If you are NOT in combat, and your wingmen are... protect them. Oversee them, keep them in the fight, and help them. Grow your men if you can, however, keep distance, they are aggresive and have been known to mid-air collide as I found out. Give plenty of room.

Hopefully Phase 3 will be in your mailboxes very soon. I can only offer that as suggestion as we have done our best to give you a bugless, seemless product which will keep your senses engulfed for years to come.

As a 10 year Veteran of 'true' WWI simming, and 2 years of active on line combat, these points are my best advice to you when you play BHAH. The rest is up to you. You will be in the cockpit soon...hang in there... and good luck!

Hi OVS, You are a very cruel man with your hints or non-hints as to the arrival of Phase 3. However, I thank you for your advice on how to survive and maybe even prosper when we are all let loose when '3' enters our hard drives. I will print out your article and it will be compulsory reading until I can recite it word perfect, Thanks a lot

As a reminder:

Dicta Boelcke

I Try to secure advantages before attacking. If possible, keep the sun behind you.
II Always follow through an attack when you have started it.
III Fire only at close range, and only when your opponent is properly in your sights.
IV Always keep your eye on your opponent, and never let yourself be deceived by ruses.
V In any form of attack it is essential to assail your opponent from behind.
VI If your opponent dives on you, do not try to evade his onslaught, but fly to meet it.
VII When over enemy lines, never forget your line of retreat.
VIII For the Staffel: Attack in groups of four or six. When the fight breaks up into a series of single combats, take care that several do not go for one opponent.

Cheers,
shredward

Famous last words

Thank you, Otto von Stachel;
for your caring and detailed advice. Only an hour ago, my third alter ego pilot got killed in action, cause he was too much in a rage. I made too close attacks, shooting at Sop Triplanes from only 30 feet, when they pulled up so steep, that they fell, dying, on my top wing at last, whilst I had decayed so much energy/speed, that I couldn't manoeuver for a sec - and a second can be too long.
And thank you, Shredward, for the "Dicta Boelke"; some of us still can't recite them, I guess (I'm one of them...)
"Next time I'll be a lot wiser and follow all the rules" may in future still though be the famous last words of many a pilot.

But one thing I improved today for good: I cared for my wingmen FIRST. To have them with me, instead of them getting lost in some distance, I flew only 85% throttle, until fights happened; so they could reach me and stay with me during the whole flight. I assigned them targets; I helped them out; and when out of ammo, I gained an overview, and showed them, when some crumpet crawled on from behind (by marking him as target, and then press "A" - so they pulled round and did). On the 2 flights, before I "died", that resulted in a good feeling; and I had witnesses to confirm my claims.

So, my advice here: do the best you can, to bring your wingmen back home. It rewards, at least in a better feeling. Olham

It seems in Ph2 that the AI is not as "smart" in the Quick Missions as they are in the Campaign mode?

IF that's so... seeing how I'm already struggling in Ph 2 Campaign, this can't be good in view of the toughened AI in Ph 3! Got a feeling the Ph 3 Gerry's will give me a nickname:

"Fokker Fodder"

Hopefully there's not a limit on the number of New Enlistments one is allowed!

Just call me Andre "Fokker Fodder" Ming :wiggle:

Great advice, OvS.

Here's to the release of P3! :ernae:

In other words: we will not see phase 3 this year..:banghead: Good thing is,the year is almost over:kilroy:

Question to OvS: On missions, do you generally form up over the airfield and fly to mission altitude before heading for the target? Or do you try to gain altitude on the way to the target?

I found in P2 that I rarely ever flew at the altitudes given in the briefing--usually much lower.

Also, I take it if you use warp, the game engine does not advance time in the same way for AI controlled aircraft, or at least does not have built-in patterns that would assume where and when flights would gain altitude and fly toward targets.

Why would aces be in a separate flight? Usually, particularly in the RFC, the more experienced pilots became flight leaders and thus should be spread out a bit between the different flights. I think this was somewhat less true in the German Imperial Air Service as well as the French Air Service, which had designated elite squadrons. Are pilots assigned to certain flights (i.e., do you tend to fly with the same few individuals most of the time)? This would be realistic in my view.

Just a few questions I had after reading your dicta...all of which sounds like excellent advice, although I'll probably use warp selectively, as I have no desire to fight World War I entirely in real time.

Max alt is set in "workshop" settings try raising it.

Aces are in separate flight as CFS3 does not allow mixed player flight.
PHASE 9 maybe..

Warp just warps to mission waypoint at alt designated. See first comment. YOU as leader can choose to climb before going over of course and AI will follow, but WARP will again put you exactly on the mission path at the mission alt. So if you want realism don't warp.

Will P3 change the thing where the player is automatically the flight leader despite rank? I always have found that to be a bit silly in P2.

It's not that silly it's just the way CFS3 works - but Phase 3 we have found away to change it and it works very well in flights.

Duuuuhhhhh. :redf:

Reckon' I've been too anxious to get to the flyin' and shootin' to look at the Main Menu for long.

Much thanks there, Ol Chap!
