• There seems to be an uptick in Political comments in recent months. Those of us who are long time members of the site know that Political and Religious content has been banned for years. Nothing has changed. Please leave all political and religious comments out of the forums.

If you recently joined the forums you were not presented with this restriction in the terms of service. This was due to a conversion error when we went from vBulletin to Xenforo. We have updated our terms of service to reflect these corrections.

Please note any post refering to a politician will be considered political even if it is intended to be humor. Our experience is these topics have a way of dividing the forums and causing deep resentment among members. It is a poison to the community. We appreciate compliance with the rules.

The Red Rippers

What follows is a single example of how the great American spirit is being relentlessly emaciated, in this case by political correctness. We are being turned from a big, proud, boisterous, take-on-all-comers Nation into a self-conscious, don’t-want-to-offend-anyone bunch of shivering wimps. The grunts are still men, but the general officers and their political manipulators are increasingly girlymen.

"The Red Ripper squadron insignia as described by an early member: "The boar’s head is taken from the one that graces the label of the Gordon's Gin bottle. The scroll effect under the head is a string of link sausage, a good line of bologna which all members of the squadron were to be adept at 'shooting'. The balls on the shield might be called balls of fire; actually, they were supposed to typify good, strong, masculinity. The bolt of lightning was the bar sinister of bastardy. The whole theme was worked into a sort of toast or creed with which the squadron members were to begin and end all good drinking bouts.

The official Ripper toast is, ‘Here's to us, the RED RIPPERS – a damned bunch of gin- drinking, bologna-slinging, two-balled, he-man bastards'."

In 2011, while on liberty in Bahrain, high ranking authorities declared the toast inappropriate and offensive, the toast was banned shortly after."

I rest my case.

Along the same lines, Chief Petty Officer initiation ceremonies are a joke - compared to years past. Political correctness, again, the reason.

All it has accomplished (as I see it) is to make everyone afraid and paranoid of offending someone, or being accused of sexual harassment, etc...

A lot of this touchy-feely PC stuff is the legacy of the 1991 Tailhook Convention incident and the witch hunt that followed. The Naval Aviation community has been increasingly neutered and marginalized by the senior levels of command, both civilian and uniformed. We've only had one aviator Chief of Naval Operations in the past 30 years, all the others have been blackshoes (Surface Force) or bubbleheads (Submarine Force) and recently they've been little more than hack politicians and fully on board with the rampant political correctness. I could go on about this over beers in a bar, but SOH is not the appropriate place for further ranting. :mixedsmi:
