I've recently had occasion to reinstall the vanilla game, and decided to play the campaign as I had never done this. I've tried some of the campaigns in the add-on's. I had started a couple in PTO and MAW but quit after a few missions.
Flying for the German side my stats so far:
25 successful missions, promoted to Major, Iron Cross, Knights Cross, Letter of Recognition. 22 Gold wound badges! (the game seems to think my landings are too harsh). 87% bombing accuracy, 14 air kills. I've "won" every mission (completed the goals) and most of England has been conquered. I am now based there. I have not launched any ground offensives.
Flew the first 20 in the 109g-6. I just fly the mission they give me, the top mission on the list, almost always bomb a ground target or ships, sometimes air cover is spawned but mostly not and take off and land. Flights have been less than 150 miles one way. I've switched to the 190 for the last 5, very different flight characteristics!
I've been tempted to open up the stock xpd's to add ammo to chase more fighters but I have not, only mod I have done is adjust the FOV to have a usable virtual cockpit.
Likes: The missions are very winnable, cuts down on frustration; short flights, as I rarely use warp; the bombs do some damage even without a direct hit; the German cannons pack enough punch to finish off the goals if you miss with the bombs; the AI's can be helpful in attaining the goals if you feel like chasing fighters to win medals.
