Article from February 2009 issue of Flight Journal; "On July 11, 2008, The National Museum of the United States Air Force took delivery of B-17D 40-3097 Flying Fortress. The fuselage from the Swoose was transported by flatbed truck from Silver Hill, Maryland to the U.S. Air Force's main museum in Dayton, Ohio. The wings followed shortly via C-5 Galaxy transport. The Swoose had been in storage with the National Air and Space Museum for the past 60 years. It was a sad day for many at NASM, but perhaps the aircraft will soon get the preservation work it deserves. The restoration queue at Dayton is long, but when the restorers finish the current project of perhaps its most famous artifact: B-17F 41-24485 Memphis Belle, they will have had lots of experience on B-17s. The Air Force Museum's other prized Flying Fortress, B-17G 42-32076 Shoo Shoo Baby is slated for transfer to NASM as soon as Memphis Belle is finished. Richard Mallory Allnutt." I might make a special trip to Dayton when it is put on display.
