As a diehard FS9 luddite, I only occasionally browse the FSX forum, and then only with passing interest.
But I sat up when not one but two major releases hit the FSX Naval Aviation scene: Javier's Nimitz and Dino's Tomcat.
Could...not...resist...and dusted off my discarded copy of FSX, booted the kids off the hot games machine...and started the process.
Da dum de dum, FSX, de dum, Acceleration, yes Win Vista I do have Admin rights you stupid bit of bossy software, first the carrier, oops need the AI Carriers thing, OK...download and install that then, next the F-14, start FSX, go to San Diego, start AI Carrier thing, BZZT! Java bomb.
Download the Java update then, now get cute and start FSX first, load the flight, then start the AIC, select Nimitz, we're in business!
Beautiful, just beautiful...screenshots by the dozen, especially of the #3-wire trap on first try, hah like riding a bike you never lose the touch!
Then...discovering that Vista denies access to My Pictures...Say What???
Yes, it seems that it also denied access to the FSX screenshot saves, so they are gone, just gone...
Ah well big boys don't cry, and I have some better ideas for screens anyway.
And a newly installed screenshot programme that sends things where I want.

Nothing I could do would return me to that scenario in FSX. Nothing. I am reminded of why I felt such pity for ACES when they tried to introduce their baby to that DX10-impaired offspring from hell, WINVista. With a bit of Java tossed in to complicate things, and I'm sure any number of unrelated games lurking in the background (WTH is Steam???) there is no future here.
Now this is not meant to elicit offers of help, I have uninstalled everything and gone back to my trusty FS9.
I just thought I'd share the fruits of those hours of fiddling and tweaking with you.
Here it is:

I feel your pain man...

The worst several months of my computer history was working with vista. As a developer, it was tripping me. I couldnt do this or that, it stacked folders whacky instead of in order, it even moved things. Config files were deleted because they were a threat at times. (How many config files does each plane have?? grim.. )

So thankful now to have my Apple computer, that runs Windows XP without my having to download drivers from hidden places on the web.

And........ I just found out the last setting that allows FSX to run smoothly without hopping, stalling, blipping, etc, etc.. (texture bandwidth to 10, was at 400).

Not to grumble, only vent... Making a plane for FSX I think takes 3 times longer. I can make a plane for FS9 in fairly quick time. A long time, but it gets done in what I call fast time as there is a ton to do... But when I convert it to FSX, it can take 3 weeks! Animations will not work right and have to be redone and redone. Attach points do not hold or stick, and you cannot figure out why its not. Tons of redundent tools for doing this and doing that (attaching serial numbers to every custom animation, attach points for mouse control, attach points for lights or visibility parts, animation links for parts that move).

Whew... cold sweats again! time for some meds.. :kilroy:

EDIT: Not puttind down FSX, not puttind down vista. They make my life difficult, but I think its because I am a developer and move as quick as possible. For many, FSX and vista work awesome, and thats what counts. I dislike negative criticism and I am not trying to bash them. For once, my FSX runs smoothly now, due to that setting, and you know, I can focus on flying now. Awesome... .

We are grownups in here, and so we can say these things without sounding as if we're whining about it...

I'm sad to see effort divided between my favourite sim and another in the first place - I can just sympathise when I hear how hard it is to make VISTAX work.
It should've been much easier, but that is history.
Maybe WIN7 will ease the pain a little.

For now, the Ooh! followed always by Aargh! in the combination is too much for me.
Luckily, I still have the luxury of retreating to my favourite place, FS9. :mixedsmi:
And thanks to all who develop and support it.
