I had heard the name before, but don't remember hearing much of their music.

I was listening to a radio show today, and as a commercial was ending, they played a snippet from (what I found out in searching) a Thin Lizzy song called, "Thin Lizzy-Johnny the Fox Meets Jimmy the Weed". Great song. Ahead of their time, I think.

Actually, if you look & listen to the guy sing, I can see a little of Jimi Hendrix influence. Don't you think?

I was a fan of theirs from the early 70's and have at least three of their vinyl albums in my collection here (including the 'Johnny the Fox' album). JTF is a very interesting album and not 'mainstream' at all, more in keeping with the 'progressive' themed albums that tell a story from start to finish.

They had a number of hits in the UK but unfortunately the only song of theirs I ever hear on the radio these days is 'The boy's are back in town' which must make most US/Canadian listeners think they were a 'one hit wonder' as that is the only song they get to hear.

TL were also slightly unusual at the time as they had a black lead singer in a rock band and he was also the bass player (it's usually the lead player/vocalist who get all the limelight).

You must have been on deployment back in 1976 when Thin Lizzy came out with The Boys Are Back In Town. It got a helluva lot of play on AM radio and the few FM rock stations that were around back then.

both the 3 piece and the 4 piece

They Boys are Back is still way overplayed, that's about the only Thin Lizzy track that I really get bored by.
Thin Lizzy is a favorite of mine...might be from a little before my time, but much of my taste in music is about 10-15 years older than I am too. Skynyrd, early Styx, early Floyd, Ted (there's only one TED!), GFR, Blackfoot, Rush, you name it.

When I was a teen my favorite song by these guys was Jailbreak over The Boys are Back in Town which was overplayed as was mentioned. Over the years I explored more of Phil's music and came to know and appreciate tunes like Dancing in the Moonlight, Do Anything You Want To, Don't Believe A Word, Still in Love with You and Whiskey in the Jar.:applause:

Oh I had heard of them, but never paid much attention to their music. My tastes back then were much different than now. But the song I linked to in my initial post.....great song. Persussion outstanding, I think.

There's a couple of nice versions of "Whiskey in the Jar" on You Tube (at work now so I can't link). Metallica did a couple of covers of it for those who prefer something with a little more "oomph." Not your usual Irish pub fare. :friday:
