This is despicable....

people have no ethics anymore..i struggle everyday of my life..and when i go out in my jazzy 614 power chair..people see a fat guy who is lazy and over eats and is most likely "using the system"....and they cant be bothered with the fact i have a broken back and a diseased spine and all that goes with that, and because of the "fat view point" i get shunned, people cut me off.close doors and gates on me.and here are people hiring "disabled" to fast track a waiting line...not only does it bother me the new york woman talks about "how the 1% do it"....but its pretty disgusting the the disabled people will do this as well...

Daveroo - I'm not surprised by what I'm seeing in this article; I saw it on another website and was wondering if anyone would comment on it. Here on SSI, a lot of people with wherewithal have moved into the neighborhood and have been trying to change everything about this island from the wonderful way it used to be (laid-back, old-fashioned manners and no pretenses among the people) to what it is now - a microcosm of major metro areas, and all the attitudes that go with those places (rush-rush, outta my way - I don't drive with my horn, that spot in front of the vegetable counter in the supermarket is reserved for me and my cart when I'm here, etc etc etc). With many of these people there is an air of entitlement they bring with them, that somehow because they have what they do they are entitled to enjoy a different set of morals and a different consideration from "ordinary" folks. Few people think deeply about things before they speak or act. You are correct - ethics and morality are not taught any more, either at home or in HS/college. Three major US govt agencies - DOS, DOJ, and IRS - are involved in ethics problems right now, related to your statements. I wonder what would have happened if just one honest high-level manager in the IRS had said something like, "Thank you, Senator Baucus, for your request to monitor these organizations. Unfortunately, what you are requesting is illegal, and immoral to boot, and is clearly being done for political reasons. I want nothing to do with it, nor do I want my subordinates to be forced to be involved. If you'll excuse me, I'm picking up the phone now and calling my IG to report this demand of yours. I'm also going to ring my command suite and tell them about it as well. This government leaks like a sieve. You can bet your demand of my agency will be on network news within a couple of hours. Have a nice day." Blind, unreasoning acquiescence by govt minions to demands like this won't wash and hasn't since 1945 and the Nuremberg trials. Whether it's the extermination of an entire group of people, or spying on others, not because what they're doing is illegal, but just because we disagree with their beliefs and want to quash them, not with our counterarguments or persuasive powers but through some sort of governmental action - it's all the same thing - illegal activity. It's time we woke up to that.

I was living on Sanibel when I first moved down here. Now I won't even go to the island anymore. So many folks who come down there have that attitude....snobbish, and "I'm special, get outta my way"

I avoid them like the plague.

There is a fairly upscale grocery store within 5 mins of the house here on the island, called "Harris Teeter." Pretty good stuff at mostly reasonable prices although some things tend to be pricey. You haven't lived until you've gone grocery shopping at HT and had someone whiffle by you in a formal gown, then pick a can of something off the shelf and put it in her cart. She was probably coming back from a function, or on her way there, but around here you never know . . .:mixedsmi:

You've heard of "Dancing With The Stars?," otherwise abbreviated as "DWTS?" When I'm ready to make the grocery run, I'll ask my bride if she's ready to go "SWTS" - "Shopping With The Snobs." In some respects, doing that is funnier than many things on the tube. And so many sour faces, young and old!

I find it's "new money" that have the snob attitude. Those born with it (generally) tend to be fairly regular folks.

I believe you to be correct. Some of the worst offenders I've noted are the older children (late teens - early/mid 20s) of those who are wealthy. Those who have had it a long time tend to be more "genteel" about it and, as you said, more "regular."

If you recall the recent street protests where so much genuine hate was expressed by the protestors for the wealthy, the kind of behavior we're discussing by the snobs doesn't go very far to endear these folks to anyone else. Most of us are like the Chief, we try to avoid them or hold our nose and tolerate them while they're in the area. No hate involved. I guess there's nothing wrong at all in enjoying the fruits of your (or your parents') labors, but rubbing them in others' faces is going a bit far.

Very well put. NC

I was at a meeting last night, and one of the guys there told me his sister regularly goes to Disney World from her home in the NY area, and does exactly what the article talks about. I told him how wrong it was in my opinion (and he agreed).

my immediate family has allways been on the poor side,we have allways lived on the line so to speak...have nice things,my folks had theyre own home by 1969 ( they married in 57 i think),my dad worked for his dad while in high school and into adulthood,as did i until my injury,my grandfather worked as a plumber for his uncle as a youngman from before WWII and then after in the Lake Tahoe area until he moved his family to auburn in 1948,but grandpa's wifes family were realited to president tyler,my dads grandmothers father was Presidents Tylers cousin..lol..

on my moms side...she and her mother and father and two older brothers lived in cabins, and after WWII they had army tents, complete with army issue heating stoves and kitchen stoves, moms cousins(grandmas brothers and sisters had the money and owned the mines and mills) and they lived in houses on the same property, one of my uncles would tell me stories of how those men would sit on the porch and drink expencive whiskey or scotch, and smoke cigars, while my grandfather simon ,moms dad,who suffered from grandmale epileptic seizures all his life, ran the lumber mill and would walk the donkeys up and down the canyon trail to the mine 4 times aday, this was where the "Auburn Lake Trails" subdivision now sits on state route (SR)193 east from SR-49 at Cool ca,and ends just short of Georgetown Ca..the mill pond, and donkey trails my grandpa created are still there,,,the mill pond is now someone "garden pond" and the owner had no clue why the stagnateant old pond was there until some 30 family members showed up at his door one day a few years ago..lol...the Eldorado county "do gooders" have also claimed the donkey trails my grandfater made as "heritage trails" they claim were created by the local native americans to "fetch water and fish",,,,my grandmother documented my grandfather using the donkeys and picks and shovel digging the trials himself,in someplaces the canyon walls are near vertical.FSX doesnt represent the canyon at all well..but fly from KAUN to E36 Georgetown ,if you start on the 07 numbers at take off over 25..i think thats called "using 25"?make a left hand 180* and and head east towards cool...well its not accaully 180..its less..but you can follow the road out of the canyon and see the "T" intersection at Cool,1/2 mile on the left in auburn lake trails...
ok..my point to all this..my family...my mom dad, sister myself have never "had money"..weve allways just gotten by and weve allways done fine...never wanted for much..dad had a jeep to go 4x4ing on the imfamous "Rubicon" trail over the sierra nevada's and through the desolation wilderness, went spent almost every weekend in a sleeping bag in the mountains when i was a kid.i raced cars..my sister did her thing..(drugs ufortunantly)..we werent wealthy..were werent poor...we were happy....the relitives who had the money..who recieved the profit from the gold mines and lumber mill, they owned airplanes..ive talked about my uncle who built an airport and then bought a plane and learned to fly..they drove caddies and lincolns..even one uncle drove a rolls royce (he and his wife virtually owned Alturas cal, they owned over 90% of the land and buildings in Alturas proper at one time)..snobs the lot of them..mom had her favorite cousin and her daughter over this past weekend..they live in the Napa valley area..and all my moms cousin could talk about was..who is going to die next, and how much money would she get this time???...it was disgusting..

one more "story" as a plumber,we got called to this house for a glogged toilet, the woman called on a friday night at 10 pm..called me at my home,i had been out for the night and was in bed with a "freind" and we were half snockered ,i wasnt gonna leave him after all the work it had taken me to...well...nm that...so i told the woman..whom id worked for many time..to close the lid,put an air freshener in the bathroom, open a window or turn on a fan..and close the door, and id be there monday as we were not a 24/7 service, and i had plans i couldnt break, and she three other bathrooms......she agreed and asked me to please be there by 7 am...

i was there at 6:58am,this house is a large 8 bedroom house, has a guesthouse that is accually a servant quarters.they have 2 drivers....one for him and one for her...the kids 3 girls all drove BMWs....as i went to the door..she told me to not just remove my boots..but she insisted i remove my pants and shirt...i started to turn and walk away..but she said...ill give you an extra 100 dollars if you do...i just dont want YOUR clothing in my home...i couldnt believe it..but i was young and proud of myself in those days..so i dropped trow...im in my tighty whities..and she motioned those off too..and to my dissapointment..handed me a pair of cotton coveralls like adult bunny rabbit pajamas....man i was so happy mark hadnt come to work with me...lol..but she then led me to the bathroom in question and i opened the door and i thought i was gonna die....one either side of the toilet were 6x6 blocks and the entier floor was covered in feces and urine..the bowl was completely full!!..the 5 of them used this bathroom to have BMs even with it stopped up from friday night to monday morning..i was beyond shocked....i asked why?..and she said..my house is worth to much money to use the upstairs bathrooms for something so disgusting as that bodily function.so i told her to clean it up and id be back to unplug the toilet when it was clean.....she laughed and walked away.....
we carried a polariod camera in the truck in those days..so i took pics..got redressed and headed to cityhall...showed the building inspector the pics..and he called the county health inspector....they then called the mental health folks who then called CPS because the girls were 16 (twins) and 17.....the house is still abandoned to this day...

again..my point..they were snobs who were to good to poop in the "good bathrooms"....and expected me..the lowly plumber,to clean up after them with our batting an eye.

Kinda ties in with my dad's experiences as a civil engineering inspector. He was on a job one day in a subdivision being built in metro Detroit back in the good old days (60s - 70s). He had been a carpenter for many years, after getting out of the Army after WWII, until an injury forced him out of the trade; he still kept his union card up to date, though - at any rate, being interested in building construction he went by one of the new, sizable homes being built and one of the plumbers was in the home doing his thing. The plumber mentioned to my father the owner of the home was installing gold-plated bathroom fixtures. Since my father had been forced by circumstance to be a hobo for many years during the Depression of the 30s, and then lived hard in the Army from early '41 to November '45, you can imagine his response.

PS - Glad the Chief is happy with that statement. A happy Chief is a good thing.

EDIT: One other comment of the Chief's got my attention - that attitude of everyone being into everything for themselves. I remember my dad's descriptions of conditions during the Depression. He really didn't like talking about most of it, but I found it fascinating. One of the reasons this country survived that very difficult time was that everyone had a sense of interdependence, and moral training in those days stressed the Golden Rule and how we were our brother's keeper, we were all in this mess together, and that was how we were going to get out of it, too. Dad was terribly hungry and cold on numerous occasions - but I don't think he ever intentionally hurt another person in his life during that period, nor did he peddle dope. His training at home held him on the straight and narrow. I don't see how similar conditions would be tolerated at all by the "me first" generations we've got alive in this country right now, and I shudder to think what's going to happen if/when the bottom falls out.
