This looks Evil.. ‘Dirty thunderstorm’: Lightning in a volcano

Same cause for normal lightening -- sufficient static electricity buildup until critical mass is reached and a discharge takes place.

But of course, amid all the other reasons not to fly in that stuff you can certainly add that one!

Not to mention you have superheated water (steam) from the glacier being melted Ken. That's one reason the lightning displays in this volcano are more intense than in an explosive gas-magma volcano.

Incredible photos. Frankly, if I was given the opportunity to do it safely, I'd love to snap some of my own of those storms. It just looks unreal.

It looks unreal because if you stood there watching the volcano for 10 days straight you'd never see this sight.

Note the long blurred stars...They are time-lapsed photos with super high light exposure settings. These are the same kind of photos where you can see turbines glowing and sparks flying on helicopters.
 
tell ya something you may or may not know about lightning... it isn't always to the ground can come from the ground, they just need opposing charges, so on a thunderstormy day and you're outside, and feel the hairs on your amrs etc stand on end... MOVE! seriously, the hairs standing up is due to static buildup a pre-cursor to a lightning strike...

that volcanic lightning is fantastic to watch..... shame the ash puts glass on your compressor blades...
