Those Pesky French Aeroplanes

Ever wonder how to correctly pronounce some of those French planes?

Here is a cheat sheet I found on another forum so don't blame me if these are incorrect!

Amiot="Am ee yo"
Bleriot="Ble ree yo"
Bloch="Blosh"
Brequet="Braygay"
Caudron="Co drun"
Dassault="Dah so"
Dewoitine="Daywateen"
Dornier="Dornyeah" (Claude Dornier was of French descent)
Farman="Far muh"
Hanriot="Han ree yo"
Latecoere="Lah tay co air"
Leduc="Luh duc"
Les Mureaux="Le mu row"
Levasseur="Luh fah sir"
Loire et Olivier="Lee your a olee vjee""
Wibault="Weebot"

Well you fell into one of those dastardly Froggy traps right away, Kevin

It ain't 'Loire et Olivier', it's 'Lioré et Olivier'. Loire is a different outfit altogether !

And, to be honest, I don't think 'Wibault' comes over as 'weebot' (that's a tight ass over here!). More like 'weebow'. I'm sure &Co can keep us right on all this.

Then again, I don't suppose there's much hope for a nation that pronounces 'buoy' as 'boo-ee' !

Never pretended to be an expert in French pronunciation - strictly the Inspector Clouseau variety.

However it does make me cringe when we Anglophones murder the language.

Michelin - 'Mitchell-in'

Citroen - 'Sit-Roe-in'

and in the US

Peugeot - 'Poo-Joe'
