Torpedoes pass through damaged cruiser without exploding

I've noticed that when a cruiser (any ship with Category="Cruiser" in the XDP) is heavily damaged--often to the point that it stops moving, but has not yet sunk--torpedoes will pass through without exploding or doing any damage. Also, sometimes it seems rockets and bullets will pass through the superstructure without doing damage, but will do damage if they strike the ships "footprint". So basically, if your airplane is armed with torpedoes and your wingmen have already heavily damaged the ship, you'll have to sink it by strafing. Does anyone understand what is going on here? Is this a bug, or can it be fixed with a workaround? While I've only noticed this for sure with Category="Cruiser" ships, I think I've also seen it with cargo ships, though I have not experimented to make sure.

Bearflag..

G'day mate, the only time I've had this happen to me is when I've got my speed/altitude or distance to target screwed up..can't say I have taken a lot of notice if this is a bug that only applies to cruisers only..I guess a lot of the outcome depends on the ships keel depth and if that's affected by any damage taken,I have noticed that most of the cruisers xdp's share a fairly shallow keel depth (about 5 or 6 metres I think..),possibly because most of us (myself included!..) when we've built our own ships have xdp's based around the default ship xdp's..out of curiosity,do you have my mogami cruiser pack?,if so do you have the same issue with them? (may play with mine as a test to find out!..),hope this helps

cheers!,Jason..

I have never had it happen, I wouldn't want to waste a torpedo if it will go down to the bottom with a couple mg rounds. I will test it though

A fast look at several cruisers .xdp file gives me the mahogami group as having the shallowest kell depth.

This is a CFS3 glitch. It happens with larger ships sometimes.

They're very heavily damaged in that section, so damaged that the torpedo goes through.

This is the center of the ship or the center of either the bow or stern sections.

The two ways to finish it at this point is to strafe the ship or fire a torpedo down the bow/stern or stern/bow longitudinal axis. That is, from one end toward the other.

Hope this helps.

hi Bear Flag,

I've had this hapen with other categories of ships, like the Ground Crew M series of destroyers, not just cruisers. Even strafing it is hard to hit them as bullets pass through the superstructure. Sounds like grizzly50 might be on to it.

Thanks, this seems most likely--more likely than keel depth since missiles & guns _seem_ like they usually go through, although I'm not sure. It is 100% obvious with torpedoes. I'll do some more experimenting.

liquidchicken, I don't have the Mogami cruiser pack. I've noticed it with stock ships, and an add-on battleship that has class=cruiser in the xdp and a keel depth of 8, same as the stock cruisers. And probably cargo ships, but those don't survive torpedo hits at the normal number of hit points. I could easily change that and test it out when I get a chance, though.
