For all who love those old aviation movies (and I do), the 1956 movie "Toward the Unkown" starring William Holden and Lloyd Nolan has finally been released on DVD. This has been one of the most sought after movies for many years. Terrible bootleg copies have sold in years past on ebay for big bucks, but now can be had at Amazon for around $14.99 plus shipping.
This movie tells the story of Lincoln Bond, a test pilot who was captured and tortured during the Korean War, and has now come back to Edwards Test facility with a soiled reputation. Bond must overcome prejudice, insecurity and his commander's lack of trust and faith in order to regain his status as an Air Force Test Pilot.
This movie is in color and was shot at Edwards at a time when there were a myriad of wonderful aircraft on base, two of the stars being the Martin XB-51 and the venerable Lockheed F-94 Starfire. The movie has loads of air to air photography not to mention the terrific shots of planes on the ground. The plot is pure 1950s drama, but the planes positively overshadow any lack in plot.
