TrackIR 5 intermittent

I have the TrackIR 5 and while it works well most of the time, it frequently will loose it's center and start "looking" all over the place. When it's doing this, the left hand green LED is off or intermittent. It doesn't seem to matter which sim I am playing, it just randomly does it for no apparent reason. It even does it in the TrackIR program. I make sure there is nothing interfering with the IR signal and the reflectors are in place on the hat clip. I use to have the TrackIR plugged into a USB hub. I plugged it directly into an open USB port but it still does it. Anyone else have this problem and maybe know what to do about it?

I can tell you that TIR can be very sensitive. It can pick up background light and can also have it's own IR light reflected by polished plastic, metal, or glass surfaces. I find it helps to sit pretty close to the transmitter/receiver unit.

That's showing you that TIR has lost 'focus' on the hat reflectors or headset LEDs because something else it can 'see' is giving a stronger response.

As 'stansdds' said something behind you is causing the issue and it can either be a direct light/heat source or a reflected one. If you open up the TIR control panel you should have four mini windows down the right-hand side the top one of which is labelled 'Camera'. To get a better view of this window click on the 'Display' button in the top left corner of the 3D window and from the drop-down menu select 'Camera view'. The main window should now show you what the camera is seeing in more detail. You should see three green rectangular 'blobs' that move as you move your head, if you see any red at all then you have a problem and that is what is causing your issues.

If you see a red blob on the left of the window the culprit is behind you and to your right as you sit in front of the computer and vice versa. Once you have found what is causing the issue move it out of the camera's field of view if possible and your problem should go away. If it is a reflection in a window, picture frame or some other reflective surface you will have to find other means of eliminating the reflected light source, either by turning the light source off or by blocking the light so that it can't reflect in the object behind you.

If you cannot remove the light source for whatever reason you can try adjusting the TIR sensitivities by clicking on the 'Camera' tab under 'Advanced settings' (on the left side of the TIR program screen) and changing the values for 'Light Filter Threshold' and 'IR Brightness'. Remember, your aim is to get three green blobs in the camera view window and absolutely no red blobs at all.

Let us know if you still have problems after doing the above.

Light from outside coming thru a window, or inside lighting, picked up by your Tracker will screw up the signal.
Turn your monitor so any lighting will be behind the Tracker unit, or it's set so it won't shine directly on the unit's head. I've had to close the blinds a bit or turn out room lights at night to keep it working smoothly. Plus a change in the settings will help too.
