Turn off lights on AI aircraft?

Since POSKY/TDS and others (KBT P-3) started using much, much smaller, and IMHO more realistic looking nav and beacon lights (which you cannot or can barely see during the day, but aren't huge glowing balls of fuzzy cotton candy looking things at dawn/dusk/night) I have found that the the lights that turn on automatically on my AI aircraft, many of which are Alphasim FS9 ports, spoil the effect.

I know they are embedded in the model so you can't comment out the air.cfg lights section, and I also assume they are using default effects files, which means if you disable those they are disabled for everything (not desirable), but is there some other way to turn them off? Having no lights in most daylight ops looks more realistic than seeing each aircraft look like Close Encounters of the Third Kind on short final, lol.
