Two questions

hurricane3

SOH-CM-2025
Believe it or not after years of having CFS2 on my puter I'am now just getting into flying it.
On three times while flying single missions ,the screen will go black ,the microsoft error message comes up, ("CFS2 has encountered a problem and has to close") and I have to control delete out and start over.
Any ideas what might be causeing this?
Second question regards combat. The enemy planes are always out of range and will zoom past so fast I can't follow.
I know one of the tactics of combat is get as close as you can ,but If I do get fairly close the enemy planes are manuvering so erraticly I can't follow.
So my question is ,how do you get close and follow the bandit long enough to bring your guns to bear? Most of the time the enemy is way out of range.
Thank you

HI there: welcome to Sim Outhouse!

as far as shooting enemy planes, I think you should concentrate on using the Tactical display (like a radar) and try to get on an enemy's tail. this involves a lot of circling to get the hang of it.
When the enemy zooms by, circle hard and try to follow it. With practice you will learn how to gauge the relative positions in space.

There are lots of friendly people here to help!

That sounds easier said than done.I have yet to circle around to get on the six of a plane that zooms, past I can never turn fast enough.
But useing the tactical display is something I never thought about for getting on a planes six.I'll try that cause I always thought it was just to let you know where the bandits and friendlies were, not to use it for manuvering.
Thanks ,I'll keep practiceing , but theres always the other guy on your six that nails you.
I don't think I'll ever be a good fighter pilot.

HI H, Beleive it or not you will catch them, and will even have to do you best not to go right by them. Yeah, they love to get on your rear end when your trying to shoot down one of ther buddies. Great sim isn`t it? That black screen thing used to happen to me. For some reason it stopped. It still happens on vals, etc. when I try using the rear gunner view. I am sticking with F4F, until I learn to land the thing. If I remember how I got rid of that black screen trouble, I`ll get back to you. See ya, Rick

Just a QuickTip...

Hurricane, the fastest way to catch an enemy flight that's passing you by [in MY experience, anyway] is to cut power and immediately bank hard to Port.

As soon as the turn is near completion, go to full power and stabilize the plane, then pursue and attack as needed. Cutting power makes the turning ratio a lot tighter than trying to make a full power turn.

Thank you for your tips and kind words, sometimes I'am ready to give up but because of guys like you I guess I'll keep at it.
If anyone knows what causes the black screen or has any other suggestions about combat ,please let me know. Thanks and remember the guys who died for us on another June 6

Regarding the black screen, its a matter of software causing a memory leak. Whenever you have this sort of problem it helps to tell the readers what operating system you have and give us some idea of your system specifications in order to help with troubleshooting. No two computers are exactly the same in software, hardware and system settings, so its difficult to pinpoint such a problem on the first try. But having your system info gives us a platform to start with.

I can tell you from experience that black screen memory leaks in combat can be attributed to a faulty gauge in the panel that hangs when switching views, errors in the dp file that dumps memory when a targeted model is hit or crashes, or more complex conflicts between your sound and video hardware (out of sync). Try replacing your player model first with another model. If the problem persist, replace the opposing aircraft also. That way you can test whether its a simple error in the models or if its a more complex system software/hardware thing. From this point you can begin the fix.

WRT basic dogfighting, the trick is always in anticipation. You learn by experience how to anticipate and preempt the moves of your opponent. In time you'll see that the CFS2 AI enemy are fairly predictable in tactics and manuevering. If he flashes by you in a head to head merge, your job is in knowing where he's going next and beating him to that point to catch him in a six o'clock position or in an abeam position for a deflection shot as he's turning. If you can catch him from his six, the basic 101 tip for latching on is to always match the aspect of his wings. Whatever position you see his wings in as you pursue, you match that position in your maneuvering for the shot and watch your throttle to avoid overshooting or stalling. That way you're always in position to follow if he suddenly breaks sharply in any direction.

To get a better grasp on the skill, learn to fly trailing and echelon "formation" with a single Zero bogey in Quick Combat. Get on his tail at 200-400 feet and follow his every move for 15-20 minutes without any shooting. Note the number of times you actually get a clean shot on his butt, wing roots or his engine as you pull lead on your gunsight. As this "opportunity" number increases, so goes your skill. Do the same from an echelon position on the target's left or right rear quarter, just like he's your flight leader. This is how the real pilots have always trained with one another for gun-fighting. Read up on air combat maneuvering (ACM) for tactical tips and tricks used by the storied gun aces from WW1 to today...there's a wealth of info awaiting you.

Good hunting!

Here is a quick tactical trick that many people forget. When you see the enemy coming toward you, fire a quick burst in his direction when he is close and then roll over on your back. As soon as you are over, pull the stick toward you and keep it there until your plane has reversed course. By that time you will have built up speed and will be somewhere close but underneath of your enemy. When you locate him, use your speed to get to his position and come up from underneath to blast him.

If he's savvy enough to pull a cuban 8 followed with a split S of his own after that first pass, you're fracked. He'll have the perch on you from above with lots of energy loaded...:icon_lol:

First the specs on my computer are ,a Dell Demension 8250 Pentium 4@ 2.80GHZ,1.5GB 1066 Rdram,128mb ATI Radeon9800 vidio card ,two 200 gb hard drives@7200 rpm sound card is a SB022, I know this is an old system (8years) but I'am happy with it till I get another puter.
As for dogfighting ,my big problem is the bandits are too far usually for effective shooting and manuvering so erraticly I can't draw a bead on one.

Watch them turn and look for a point of interception on their new path as they change direction. That's where you line up a deflection shot or just climb back on their six. Use diving airspeed and war emergency power to catch up whenever possible. If they're too far away, let them go and wait for them to re-engage, or just select a closer target with possibilities for a kill.

As for the erratic maneuvering, the solution is in my 1st post---learn to fly their maneuvering patterns by flying as an enemy "wingman" on single targets only in QC. Don't go for the kill right away, just fly their six for a while and watch their moves until you can match them by second nature.

Hey H; I am pretty new at this too. As you can see there are a lot of guys here that are willing to help you. I am just starting to figure out computers, mine is behaving well, thank goodness. I messed around with the sim for awhile, and thought I was doing good. Now I am trying to learn to fly better. This is a real good sim. Don`t tell me you can land these birds, already! I have been trying to land for about a week now, good thing there are plenty of aircraft! D`ont give up on it. As bad as I am, I like cfs2 more every time I use it. My wife thinks I`m a geek now. That used to be an insult!

Good points Marieried. Also, don't get target fixated. Keep one eye on that tactical display to watch for a bandit creeping up on your six. As BC said, let one bandit go, if you have to, in order to get the drop on another, closer, target. Try the training mission "High Side Attack" to get some practice in deflection shooting. Remember to shoot at where he's gonna be... not where he is. :applause:

I need to practice, practice and then ,practice some more.I don't know if I'll ever get good at this ,but with you guys helping ,who knows? Thanks to all
