Unnecessary Sound Files

I wanted to go through all my "ai" only aircraft and delete the sound folders, I am fairly certain a sound folder is not used by an ai aircraft. The ai aircraft do use a generic ai_fighter.wav file, but not the sound folder that is inside of each individual aircraft folder. Correct????

One thing you can do is moving all sound files to shared/ and link them in the sound.cfg, as has been done for MAW for instance. This will save you even more space as I guess you have several Spit, Corsairs ... with redundant sound files.

Agreed, moving these to a shared folder will definitely save space. However except for a single generic sound file (ai_fighter/bomber), ai aircraft do not use a sound folder. At least I think thats the case. If true, getting rid of sound folders in ai aircraft altogether will save lots of space.

Not sure lewis but it sounds like a good idea. I would go ahead and test one. Say, the Bf-109g6. I think there is actually a bf-109 ai file too on it's own in the game/sound folder. Just remove it and rename it somewhere outside of the microsoft games folder. Then try it. Yes you do need it to run as ai so try one of those as well. It may only need the folder structure in some check code. If that's the case, just empty it and that shoudl help save space. I just had to delete some things on mine so I know what you mean.

Good luck.

This will save space for an ai aircraft type you do not also have as flyable aircraft, as the sound.cfg is merely an alias pointing to the true sound folder in shared/ (for instance all my Hurricanes point to the copied MAW sound folder) If you have both flyable and ai version of the same aircraft, there is about no point removing the sound.cfg from the ai one.

As for me, I have few AI only aircraft type, and they have no original sound file in general.

I do have many ai only aircraft and thats a lot of wasted space. I did check out one of my flyable aircraft which has a custom ai_sound file. I removed the sound folder and when you fly the plane it has no sound but you can hear all your wingmen. Also when I flew against that plane, it had sound. So it is ok to remove the sound folder.

:)

AIs use AI-specific sounds. You can assign specific AI engine sounds to particular aircraft; open the MAW sound.cfg and you'll see how it's done. Just don't start any of the sim names with a figure, or it won't work. That means AvH older generation aircraft (3XX_) need renaming. But they do not need anything more than a valid alias in the actual sounds folder. It takes so little room in any case...

Right nDicki. the ai planes just used an alias anyway. Well lewis, give it a look over and see if you can really save room.

All of my aircraft have their own specific ai sound file. I just copied the generic sound.xml entries with a different wav file and aircraft name, like the line of text below. Ai aircraft without sound folders always have a sound whether generic or specific unless you are flying it. Since you never fly an "ai only" aircraft these have practically no use for a sound folder. Anyway that is my conclusion of the matter.

<sound file="ai_p38.wav" />
