*** Mission background****
There are Two sets of Bomber missions for Poliesti,,
One set Firepower B-24 with Luft interception missions Historical Missions
One set AVH B-17G with Luft interception missions What if Missions
As happened in the attack.. The Bombers became seperated and flew in as they could.
One Group ended up over Bucharest, to the south, they turned on to Target at a rail yard, as in the missions sets,,
Another set made the Waypoint for the mission and attacked from there..Out of 5 major groups only 2 made the mission waypoints and attacked as planned..
These are missions based on these facts..
It was very confused over the target area..
In the Missions from the North, You Must make a Hooked turn to the target area, as in the 1943 mission..
***YOU MUST Dive to 100ft or less and fly your own aircraft at Waypoint 11/13/15(depending on the mission).. And You Must keep yourself in Formation as reqiured in the Poliesti attack..
Follow the AI groups in front of you***.. Do not warp in the target area>> Fly the mission as the pilots in 1943 did..
I RECOMMEND YOU DIVE FAST TO 100 FT OR LOWER:
GET YOURSELF IN A SAFE POSITION IN THE FORMATION
***The Loadout of 100 Lb bombs allow you to destroy the target at under 100 ft and survive..
Not Historical, But the Limits of the Game do Not allow for the use of delayed-fused bombs yet....
One of the Many problems encountered in building these missions to be overcame..
And You Must Watch for AA fire and enemy aircraft.. Keep Turning and changing altitude as possible to throw off the AA gunners..
It will keep you Busy in the target area staying alive..
***These Missions are as historical as possible given the game Limitations..
The B-17 Missions are what-if missions for those who do not have Firepower's B-24 loaded..
Operation Tidal Wave was a strategic bombing mission executed by the American Air Forces in August 1943, during World War II intended to put nine Romanian oil refineries around Ploiesti "out of action." The mission was unsuccessful in that it resulted in "no curtailment of overall product output".
In terms of loss of life, this mission was one of the costliest for the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) in the European Theatre, accounting for the loss of 53 ( some accounts say 55 aircraft lost) aircraft and 660 aircrewmen. The day that it took place is known as "Black Sunday." Five Medals of Honor and numerous Distinguished Service Crosses were awarded to Operation Tidal Wave crew members.
Luftwaffe General Alfred Gerstenberg built one of the heaviest and best-integrated air defense networks in Europe. Defenses included several hundred anti-aircraft artillery pieces (105 mm—88 mm) and small-caliber guns in haystacks and false structures (e.g., false-sided rolling stock that was actually mobile).
A Luftwaffe air command center in Lipesk controlled three fighter groups (Bf 110 night fighters & Bf 109s) within flight range of Ploiesti (Romanian fighters plus 52 Luftwaffe fighters). Gerstenberg also relied on signal intelligence based in Athens, Greece, to achieve greater awareness of preparations being made by the 9th Air Force from as far away as North Africa.
Only 88 B-24s returned to Libya, of which 55 had battle damage. Losses included 44 to air defenses and additional B-24s that ditched in the Mediterranean Sea or were interned (e.g., a few landed in the neutral country Turkey). Some were diverted (e.g., to the RAF airfield on Cyprus, and one B-24 with 365 shell holes in it landed in Libya 14 hours after departing
These missions are intened to give a general feel for the Poliesti attack,,I did Not focus on any single aircraft or crew. I built these to Honor all the Brave men who fought and suffered amd Died that day..
May all enjoy these missions
I shall uploading a AXIS set for those who requested it..
It is nearly finished also..
