I have flown about 12 missions with the same pilot (which is my record) flying Spad XIIIs late in the war for the 94 aero squadron. 100 realism (short of the Siggi standard due to warp and labels)

Before this last mission I had 1 confrmed balloon and claims in for 1 Fokker DR1, 1 Fokker DVII and one Hannover CLIII. All really cool unique fights.

I scored another balloon in this last mission (which makes 5 total kills if this last mission is confirmed!) .

This has probably been the best combat flight sim experience I have had.

Very nice.....hard to stay alive with a Spad. But I love flying them, I think I have made 17 and ace 1 time out of 5 on average, DVIIs just are tough competitors. Especially when my flight only consists now of three planes due to losses; my duty board is looking really sad......I think I am single handedly losing the war!!!:Banane40:

17 is quite a bit!

I started playing the sim on January 22nd and it was a loooong month. I had to have lost 20 pilots, none of them aces. It seems I have gotten the hang of fighting with the Spad (more like staying alive) and filling out proper claim forms.

In a wierd twist of fate the pilot (not an ace and not even a confirmed kill) that lasted the longest (18 hours of combat) was my very first one! He spent the balance of the war in a prison camp if I recall.

Congrats, MK2
you're a month ahead - I can start all over again, after messing the installation up. But I'll do my best to follow you.

PS: the SPAD is extremely good at boom-and-zoom tactics. Just don't try turn fights. But fast dives, with a roll, to change direction suddenly, she can perform great! Climb is also good, due to strong engine. D VII is your worst opponent.

I recieved a pleasent surprize, I campaigned with a Pup for about 5 missions. Then I changed pilots, and start flying a Sopwith Tripe, after a few weeks time, it was back to the Pup
( I've elevated Indeceisivness to an Art Form )
Upon returning I Discovered, one of my claims for a balloon was OKed :kilroy:

I trust the Spad above all others now that I can fly it in boom and zoom. For me it's more "boom and extend" than "boom and zoom". Once you extend and come back into the fight you can build a head of steam just in level flight.

So the main positive is sheer speed allowing me to disengage and reengage at will...in my opinon more important than turning.

One huge bad characteristic however is that it flies like a suicidal brick when turning and banking hard at low altitudes.

Congratulations!

In that case, your only option is to extend out of range of the enemy's guns, then climb up to height and then reengage. NEVER get in a turning fight while flying a SPAD!
