US Navy P-51 Mustang????

In my library at one time I had a rather detailed book on the P-51, I can't remember the title as I've not seen it in almost 30 years. Anyways there was a very short section on the navalized Mustang but the article you linked to has much more info and I had never seen any depiction of it in Navy paint. Might make an interesting repaint for on of the flight sims.:salute:

I do recall reading about tests conducted of a navalized P-51D with arresting gear and strengthened landing gear. There was a photo accompanying the article that depicted the test Mustang, but it was essentially in an unpolished, natural metal factory finish. Apparently the tests were successful overall, but the US Navy chose not to pursue further development or deployment based on their policy of relying on aircraft powered by air-cooled, piston radial engines which were deemed more reliable, desirable for long flights over water, and less prone to damage than the liquid-cooled V-12 Merlin.
