USAF Marking and Shields

OBIO

Retired SOH Admin
A while back I did a thread asking for sources for good quality USAF tail shields and squadron insignia. Got several good links provided. I book marked them all.....but that was on my old system and I can't find the export of the Firefox book marks I did before tearing my old system apart and rebuilding it for my sis-in-law.

I tried using the SOH search function to find that thread...but I was only shown two pages of threads I started..and none of them were the right one.

So, where can I find good quality USAF markings and squadron insignia to use on USAF jet paints. Currently working on the freeware Alpha F-105s.

if you know the unit wikipedia usually has them along with crests for things like Materiel Command, Missile Command etc... apart from that i'd like to know also :salute:

As Smoothie said, and I also google the specific unit which usually leads to dozens of links, some of them actually useable for the purpose at hand.

And don't forget (using myself as reference!) Simmers Paintshop.

Duckie is right; Simmers is the THE place in my opinion for swatches fonts and markings. If it ever goes down I am in big trouble. Fortunately I saved a swatches plug-in for Photoshop for my UK swatches.

USA swatches:

Plenty here to work with for markings:

I have all the PSD insignia sets and all the color swatches from Simmerspaintshop downloaded and archived in 5 places. A great resource for skinners for sure.

But what I am looking for are the more modern USAF tail shields....like the ones on this site:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategic_Air_Command

The shield to the right side of the page.

The one I am looking for for the current Thud paint is shield shaped. In the center of the shield there is a round thing (globe maybe) with a yellow/gold wing coming off the right side of the "globe". I have not been able to find one like that at all...and I have hunted high and low.

The scheme I am working on is for an F-105D of the 335 TFS/4th TFW, attached to the 355 TFW, Takhli AFB, Thailand, December 1965.

I may just opt to use the Stategic Air Command tail shield and forget about the winged globe one.

Thanks for the info flyboyhunt05. I found a crisp clean PAF shield and can not move ahead with the paint. Not 100% sure if the tail shield is in fact for the Pac Air Forces, but it's close enough for Guberment Woyk!

USAFPatches.com is the Internet's largest and oldest continuously operated website focused on USAF patch collecting... Have you tried it?

Good thing you found the correct PACAF Shield, OBIO. Using the SAC patch would have been totally wrong, as the Vietnam era Thuds only flew under TAC, Tactical Air Command.
