USB question

hi all,
I need to add USB ports to my new PC,just talked to the techie from ecollegepc.com and he said to go with a PCIe card to add more, but i dont know if the 3.0 is ok,or if i need to find a 2.0 card? im connecting my saitek gear, yoke,a panel, two throttle quads, and the CP products rudder peddles.also a raid driver train controller, steering wheel, peddles and shifter.

i was also wondering if i can leave them all connected at the same time?..or should i find some way to isolate them in three groups, and be able to switch them on and off for the sim im using?..any ideas?

I had USB cards in my old computer and they worked fine with multiple items plugged into them. Before that I had USB hubs which always gave me problems. I would get the USB 3.0 cards. Tech is faster and backwards compatible with any USB 2.0 stuff.

If I recall correctly, only the USB Type A connectors are cross compatible when using USB 3.0. Keep in mind that's the connectors, some devices may not be backward or forward compatible, depends on the device. You can install a USB 3.0 PCIe card if your computer has USB 2.0 or a USB 2.0 card if your computer has USB 3.0 so you can have both standards for various devices. If you want to attach multiple USB devices, you can get a USB hub that has push button switches for each channel. They are pretty cheap and the USB PCIe cards are not too expensive either. If the USB devices are 2.0, there is no point in getting a 3.0 card.

If your PC is new then it probably has both. If you buy newer peripherals and they are USB 3.0 technology (faster) then it makes more sense to buy the 3.0 cards so both are covered. I don't have any devices which came with a connector other than a Type A.

Why no USB hub? No need for USB3 with the game controllers. I'd figure that the most imminent issue with all that gear is power consumption. I'd get a hub with it's own power supply and make sure it always stays in the same USB socket on the computer.
The USB logic can get messed up if the same unit is replugged to another USB port.

Cheers,
Mark

I didn't say USB hubs won't work, I just said I always had problems with them. Of course they have probably improved much since I used them. Determining adequate power supply for your new PC should be easy to calculate no matter which way you go.

Use this way USB 2.0 > USB 2.0 HUB (ok), USB 2.0 > USB 3.0 HUB (no!), USB 3.0 > USB 2.0 HUB (ok), USB 3.1 > USB 3.0 HUB and 2.0 HUB (ok).
BUT some of kind panels and controllers need to pluged direct for moterboard). For example some of Saitek Panels, TH Warthog too (if You use a TARGET software).

I have all my saitek gear (throttles, all of the panels, and trim wheel) on the same hub. TM Warthog and my pedals on a second hub. Never had a problem.

I think it is imperative to switch off power saving for the units, maybe this is something where problems might arise. And unplugging / replugging into different ports, as mentioned above.

I have several Saitek panels and with one exception they all happily function thru' the powered hub. The odd one out is the Switch panel which will not tolerate being connected thru the hub and has to go a direct input on the PC. Otherwise anything else I have is happy with the hub. All just FYI.
