USS JFK in Malta. Good picture

That's the port of Valletta. They're being berthed right at the main waterfront, that sure beats anchoring outside the harbor. Go ashore anytime you want, no waiting for boats. :)

Great picture!

The Megayacht owner would've been less than pleased when that thing hove to.
They hate to be overshadowed.

Come to think of it, might've been easier just to move Malta over a few chain lengths...

I never was fortunate enough to be on a carrier that was able to dock for a port visit. I did Med cruises, and we always anchored out over a mile or so from fleet landing. They leased ferry boats, and it took hours to get everyone off the ship that wasn't on duty. That was back when I used to drink. Normally they sold beer on the ferry boat, and I would finish off three before reaching the dock............

Yep, that's the Med for ya. On my JFK cruise 1978-79 we were only alongside a pier twice: at Rota just before we entered the Med and again at Rota when we left. Everywhere else it was ferries, water taxis or the ship's utility boats. Like NC said, a drinkin' man could put down 2-3 brews on the ferry and already be in the feel-good zone when he got to Fleet Landing. Not that I myself ever indulged, of course...;) :icon29:

I actually regret all the drinking I did back then. I don't remember much of any of the port visits (not surprisingly). So many opportunities lost, but I guess that's life sometimes. NC

Nice !.

I thought JFK was decomissioned ?, though looking a little closer she has a RIM-116 fitted Port quarter which is the new CIWIS replacing the Phalanx, dont make sense to fit upto the minute weapons on an old soon to be decomissioned vessels. Gonna go check my sources on this, F-14s date it to last year or older, not sure when RIM-116 was made fleet wide ?.

Kindest

Michael

Addendum, quick check in my archives finds this from Jun 04, seems RIM-116 'isnt' that new :). Big picture here http://homepage.ntlworld.com/mickoo/Images Ships/040607-N-8704K-003.jpg Enjoy !.

Speaking of retrofitting, I remember when all the A-7Es in the USN inventory had the ESCAPAC seats replaced with NACES. Wasn't long after that they were all sent to the boneyard......

The way the water's churned up you'd think they shoved the JFK aground. And it sure won't be no 3 hour tour. ;)

Sounds like when I was doing the fleet sailor thing. I hate to think of all the money I blew on drinking.

When I was on the Lexington back in the 70s, we had a MR2 in the machine shop that never went out drinking and partying with the rest of us. He'd spend his money on weekends taking flying lessons. After almost 4 years onboard the Lex, he had his multi-engine commercial license. Looking back at it, he was the only guy in A-gang that had his priorities right.

Oh well Navychief, at least the JFK was berthed in a historic spot...thats where the Ohio was first tied up after Operation Pedestal.

Yep, JFK is now in the Philadelphia Navy Yard. It's odd that they have her sticking straight out into the river.

Last I heard, someone was trying to acquire it for a museum, but I don't know anything beyond that.
