V4 Conundrum

Well, I made the switch back to Win7(SP1) and as a result had to completely reinstall V4. I kept my vital folders (Gauges, effects, sounds, SimObjects) and downloaded the latest iteration of V4 and went through the installation. I expected it would be as good as it was in Win10 (no reason to think otherwise) but it is not. Stuttering, hesitations, blurry textures, buildings with roof textures but nothing else and poor fps (teens and single digits). One thing I am checking on this morning is whether or not the recent hotfix is included in the current download. If it is, I'm good on that end but if not I need to get that downloaded as well.

Anyone ever run into this or have any suggestions other than reinstalling?

Two things in fact.

First: since you got through a complete Windows 7 reinstall (if I understood correctly), then I hope you have also installed some up-to-date drivers for your video card ? And in any case, after installing P3Dv4 and seeing the bad performance, have you taken the time to reboot and then delete the shaders (in appdata/local/....) of P3D to check if there were any benefits ?

Second: you kept the gauges and simobjects... Have you checked how did the freshly installed sim performed without any addons prior to paste your previous addons inside ?

Finally, P3D has some nasty options which are better kept disabled, in the game settings. How are your settings at the moment ?

P3D 4 runs just fine on my Win7 Ultimate 64 bit system. 4ghz I-7 quad CPU, 16 gb ram, R9 380 4gb video card. I think cheating on the install did it. The roof textures and nothing else really sounds like a bad install, or OrbX scenery without the library...

This might apply or not, but on my system the enabled speed trees had a huge impact. Disabled the wobbling vegetation and the fps went to an unprecedented high.

Cheers,
Mark

The updated Driver was the first thing I took care of after Win7 was up and running. I did delete the shaders with no change (buildings still lack textures and stuttering remains).

Here's what I did. I went to each folder for V4 and deleted everything related. In the main V4 Sim folder I deleted everything except those folders mentioned above. I then ran the installation for V4 (which contains the recent hotfix). So to answer your question, no I didn't try it without those addons because they were already present during the new install.

Finally, P3D has some nasty options which are better kept disabled, in the game settings. How are your settings at the moment?
Mine are very plain vanilla compared to what they could be with a better system. Anything with "Dynamic" as part of the name is turned off, water is low, shadows are low, scenery densities are less than Max and so on. Actually, the current settings are lower than those I had in Win10 in which I saw continuous fps in the 30+ range and rock solid textures, no stuttering.

Ed, if you downloaded V4 in the last couple of days the hot fix is included. I had to do a complete re-install and when I tried to install the hot fix I was told it was already in the sim.

Thanks Pat, I already alluded to that in my comments to Daube above.

Some additional explanation is required here actually. I did a backup of the important folders prior to the Win7 Installation (to include those related to P3D and FSX), which was done to a new 1Tb HDD. Because of the new OS, P3D and FSX no longer showed in the registry or Control panel so I could not do an uninstall per se but rather had to "delete" everything. That's why the main P3D_V4 folder was left with just the gauges, effects, sounds and SimObjects folders intact. . .then the installation was done pointing it to the original location which was on a separate HDD.

Why did you dump Windows 10? I disabled all of the intrusive bits, and find it's much better than 7. Never thought I'd say that.

Personal opinion really, I have some reasons based on how Win10 affected programs I use for Scenery Design, how I began seeing texture problems in aircraft that were never a problem before and that friends who were running the same airplane in the same sim (running Win7) did not see. Again, personal opinion only. If Win10 is good for you that's great. . .I did not come away with the same opinion.

Windows 7 runs P3Dv4 like our Daphne Schippers runs the 100 and 200 meters. (European record, Olympic record ;-)

From your description i'd say best thing to do is to start over ( don't keep anything). Install W7, install P3Dv4, check it out, install your Orbx/FTX stuff one by one and check it out with any of the default aircraft. That's what i did (with exception of reinstall W7, no need for) and was totally flabbergasted, especially after installing Orbx/FTX. I still have no socks on because of Drzewiecky New York CityX. Unbelievable really.

May sound simple and a lotta work but i'm sure you'll be rewarded !

cheers,
Jan

I agree Jan. This V4 install was not as "clean" as it should have been and so I'll start over from the beginning. Fingers Crossed.

A quick update. Complete uninstall and any stragglers deleted, then reinstalled. . .reinstalled all Orbx Products currently V4 ready, added "FreeMesh" and some East Coast area sceneries of mine and all seems back in order. . .still a slight stutter, but that may smooth out over time.:jump:
