VMC into IMC continues to be a world-wide stubborn source of too many accidents & deaths. In this video we look at a 2022 Australian case study involving a Cessna 182 Skylane, analyse what went wrong in that case, & then provide some advice on preferably avoiding VFR into IMC, or surviving it if entered inadverdently. Scud running. Many have done it. In the U.S. Navy "Approach" magazine, Grampa Pettibones says the cause is "gethomeitits". When you get gethomeitis you are flirting with disaster and death.

I once got caught VFR on Top with a solid deck below me. I was in a rented C-172 which, while it included all the proper gauges, had a "Not IFR Rated" sticker on the dash. I hadn't flown an IFR approach in over a year, so I wasn't current to fly IFR. Of course, I was also getting low on fuel.

With the help of my friendly ATC controller I was able to find an area that was broken to let down. I had to “cheat” and fly through some clouds, however the ceiling was around 1000 feet AGL and I was able to slip below the clouds and land.

No, I took off in good weather. The route was predicted to be VFR all the way to Midland, TX. It just got clouder the further west I flew. Once I pasted Waco, TX, where I refuled, it quickly cleared.
