From 1945 through the 1970's Wallop's Island was very active, routinely launching weather probes, satellites and test rockets. Through the 90's it was pretty quiet, now it's been "reactivated" and many of the locals are not happy. I'm thinking that Wallop's will see more launches since the space shuttle fleet is being retired. I remember a vacation to Chincoteague Island, a neighbor to Wallop's Island, back around 1980. We were touring the facility and had the opportunity to watch a sub-orbital vehicle launch.
